Where Can We Find Hope?

Where Can We Find Hope?

Finding - Part 1
Every year, I look forward to Thanksgiving and Black Friday discount shopping. The week before Thanksgiving, I check out ads online to find good deals on items we need and Christmas gifts. Everyone who knows me well knows that I love to use coupons and shop for items on sale. I was excited this year when one of my favorite stores sent me a coupon for an extra 20 percent off.

During the week of Thanksgiving, I anxiously went to that store and picked out a couple of items. When I went to checkout, I was told that the coupon did not work on the items that I was buying. This same scenario happens every year. I will find an extra discount or coupon to use in a store, but when I checkout, there is always a reason that my coupon doesn’t work. We often put our hope in people or things and end up disappointed. Where can we find hope that won’t disappoint?

On Sunday, Pastor Josh said that our hope is found in Jesus. He never waivers. He has always been and always will be who He said He is, the Savior of the world. Pastor Josh mentioned three important points about the hope we have in Christ. 1) Jesus is the basis for our hope. 2) We have blessings because we have real hope. 3) We can be the bearers of hope in a hopeless world.

Jesus gives us peace during hard situations and hope for eternal life with Him.

What is the hope that Jesus gives us? We have hope that we can spend eternity in heaven with Jesus. 2 Timothy 4:8 says, “There is reserved for me in the future the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will give me on that day, and not only to me, but to all those who have loved His appearing.” Things in this world are temporary, but our relationship with Jesus is eternal. All we have to do is put our trust in Him. We have hope that Jesus loves us and will take care of us.

We do have blessings because of our hope in Jesus. We have peace knowing that our Christian relatives and friends who have passed away before us are in heaven, and if we accept Jesus, we will get to see them again. When I was younger, I was always really close to my grandma. I would stay all night at her house, and she would let me stay up late to play rummy and eat ice cream drumsticks. She passed away when I was in college, and it was difficult for me because we had been so close. However, I have hope in knowing that I will see her again one day. 1 Thessalonians 4:13 says, “We do not want you to be uninformed, brothers, concerning those who are asleep, so that you will not grieve like the rest, who have no hope.”

Lastly, it is our duty as Christians to be bearers of hope in this world. After listening to about five minutes of the news, you realize that many people are hopeless. The hope they are looking for can only be found in Jesus. Jesus gives us peace during hard situations and hope for eternal life with Him.

During Advent, what can you do to give others hope? You can invite them to one of our Christmas services, or you can serve others by shoveling the snow on their sidewalk, baking cookies to share, or taking a hot bowl of soup to a neighbor who is ill. Just imagine what would happen if we all reached out and spread kindness and hope to two or three families during this Christmas season!
