Path of Victory - Part 3 [Notes]

You’re invited to join us for "The Path of Victory"—a six-week journey through the life of Jesus. From His humble beginnings to His life-changing ministry, and ultimately to His death and victorious resurrection, we’ll follow His story all the way to Easter Sunday and beyond. Along the way, we’ll explore six defining attributes of Jesus and ask God to shape and grow these same transformational qualities in our own lives as His followers.
Takeaway: Build your life on the Truth.
“Hello guys, we are clearing out items from my Dad’s house (he got moved to aged care) and he is no longer in need of these items and he is glad to have the extra money for other expenses on coming holidays. We have a truck and can deliver at a small extra fee. Send a DM if interested in any item. FIRST COME FIRST SERVE BASIS!”
The Word became flesh and took up residence among us. We observed His glory, the glory as the One and Only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.
– John 1:14 (HCSB)
“I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.”
– John 14:6 (HCSB)
Build your life on the Truth.
"Therefore, everyone who hears these words of Mine and acts on them will be like a sensible man who built his house on the rock. The rain fell, the rivers rose, and the winds blew and pounded that house. Yet it didn’t collapse, because its foundation was on the rock. But everyone who hears these words of Mine and doesn’t act on them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. The rain fell, the rivers rose, the winds blew and pounded that house, and it collapsed. And its collapse was great!" When Jesus had finished this sermon, the crowds were astonished at His teaching, because He was teaching them like one who had authority, and not like their scribes.
– Matthew 7:24-29 (HCSB)
The Sermon the Mount – Gospel of Matthew, Chapters 5-7
When He saw the crowds, He went up on the mountain, and after He sat down, His disciples came to Him. Then He began to teach them, saying…”
– Matthew 5:1-2 (HCSB)
“For Matthew, Jesus is the Teacher, called so by himself and by others. His whole public ministry is directed toward instructing the people. He takes advantage of every opportunity to lead them into a deeper understanding of God … As a preacher, Jesus has the prophetic ministry of expounding the Word of God, calling the people to repentance, warning of the coming judgment of God on sin, announcing the arrival of the kingdom of God, and proclaiming the end of the age with his glorious second coming.” (69-70)
Encountering the New Testament, Dr. Walter Elwell and Dr. Robert Yarbrough
He did not commit sin, and no deceit was found in His mouth.
– 1 Peter 2:22 (HCSB)
He was a murderer from the beginning and has not stood in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he tells a lie, he speaks from his own nature, because he is a liar and the father of liars.
– John 8:44b (HCSB)
Build your life on the Truth
"Therefore, everyone who hears these words of Mine and acts on them will be like a sensible man who built his house on the rock. The rain fell, the rivers rose, and the winds blew and pounded that house. Yet it didn’t collapse, because its foundation was on the rock."
– Matthew 7:24-25 (HCSB)
Build your life on the Truth
  1. The wise hear and act on the Truth (Rock)
But be doers of the Word and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.
– James 1:22 (HCSB)
Read, Reflect, Respond, Relationship
"But everyone who hears these words of Mine and doesn’t act on them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. The rain fell, the rivers rose, the winds blew and pounded that house, and it collapsed. And its collapse was great!"
– Matthew 7:26-27 (HCSB)
Build your life on the Truth
  1. The wise hear and act on the Truth (Rock)
  2. The foolish hear but ignore the Truth (Sand)
But be doers of the Word and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. Because if anyone is a hearer of the Word and not a doer, he is like a man looking at his own face in a mirror—he looks at himself, goes away, and immediately forgets what kind of man he was.
– James 1:22-24 (HCSB)
When Jesus had finished this sermon, the crowds were astonished at His teaching, because He was teaching them like one who had authority, and not like their scribes.
– Matthew 4:18–22
Build your life on the Truth
  1. The wise hear and act on the Truth (Rock)
  2. The foolish hear but ignore the Truth (Sand)
  3. Jesus taught with authority because He is the Truth
“Amazed (exeplēssonto, lit., ‘struck out’) means ‘overwhelmed.’ It suggests a strong, sudden sense of being astounded. The authority of Jesus is what amazed them, for He taught as a Spokesman from God—not as the teachers of His time who were simply reflecting the authority of the Law. The contrast between Jesus and the religious leaders was most pronounced.” (p. 36)
– Dr. Louis Barbieri, The Bible Knowledge Commentary
I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.
– John 14:6 (HCSB)

Discussion Questions //

  1. Can you think of a time—like the Facebook mower story—when you trusted something that seemed true, but wasn’t? What helped you see through the lie and recognize the truth?
  2. Jesus said the wise person doesn’t just hear His words but acts on them. Read James 1:22–24. James compares hearing the Word without doing it to looking in a mirror and forgetting what you saw. What’s one area where you’ve heard the truth clearly—but have been slow to respond?
  3. Jesus warned that building your life on anything other than His words is like building on sand. Read Matthew 7:24–27. What cultural ideas, personal desires, or flat out lies might tempt you to build on something that won’t last?
  4. The crowds were amazed because Jesus spoke with authority—not like anyone else. Read Matthew 7:28-29 and John 14:6. In a world full of voices claiming to offer truth, what does it mean for you to truly live under the authority of Jesus—the One who is the Truth?
  5. Maybe you’ve realized today that you’ve been building on the wrong foundation—or maybe you just need to strengthen what’s already in place. What’s one step you can take this week to start (or continue) building your life on the unshakable truth of Jesus and His Word?
