I Might Have a Problem - Part 4 [Notes]

You’re invited to join us for "I Might Have a Problem," a six-week series tackling real-life struggles that impact nearly everyone. Whether it’s spending too much time on your phone, struggling with money, running on empty, or dealing with thoughts you can’t seem to escape—this series is for you. We’ll explore what the Bible has to say about these challenges, and discover steps we can take to live with more purpose, peace, and freedom. Whether you know you have a problem—or just might have a problem—this series will help you, and the people you care about, take healthy steps forward. Modern problems. Biblical solutions.
Takeaway: When a relationship is off, look in the mirror before you speak out.
“Where two or more are gathered, there will be two or more opinions.”
– Dr. Jane Donovan.
And [Adam] said, “I heard You in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked, so I hid.” Then [The Lord] asked, “Who told you that you were naked? Did you eat from the tree that I commanded you not to eat from?” The man replied, “The woman you gave to be with me—she gave me some fruit from the tree, and I ate.”
– Genesis 3:10-12 (CSB)
Do not judge, so that you won’t be judged. For you will be judged by the same standard with which you judge others, and you will be measured by the same measure you use.”
– Matthew 7:1-2 (CSB)
Stop judging according to outward appearances; rather judge according to righteous judgment.
– John 7:24 (CSB)
What Jesus condemned is hypocritical judgment that focuses on the faults of others while excusing one’s own sins.”
– Charles Quarles, CSB Study Bible
Why do you look at the splinter in your brother’s eye but don’t notice the beam of wood in your own eye? Or how can you say to your brother, "Let me take the splinter out of your eye," and look, there’s a beam of wood in your own eye?
– Matthew 7:3-4 (CSB)
Hypocrite! First take the beam of wood out of your eye, and then you will see clearly to take the splinter out of your brother’s eye.
– Matthew 7:5 (CSB)
When a relationship is off, look in the mirror before you speak out.
If possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone.
– Romans 12:18 (CSB)
Gospel Humility
If, then, there is any encouragement in Christ, if any consolation of love, if any fellowship with the Spirit, if any affection and mercy, make my joy complete by thinking the same way, having the same love, united in spirit, intent on one purpose. Do nothing out of selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility consider others as more important than yourselves. Everyone should look not to his own interests, but rather to the interests of others.
– Philippians 2:1-4 (CSB)
Gospel Humility
Fix our eyes on Christ
Adopt the same attitude as that of Christ Jesus,
who, existing in the form of God,
did not consider equality with God
as something to be exploited.
Instead He emptied himself
by assuming the form of a servant,
taking on the likeness of humanity.
And when He had come as a man,
He humbled himself by becoming obedient
to the point of death—
even to death on a cross.
For this reason God highly exalted Him
and gave Him the name
that is above every name,
so that at the name of Jesus
every knee will bow—
in heaven and on earth
and under the earth—
and every tongue will confess
that Jesus Christ is Lord,
to the glory of God the Father.
– Philippians 2:5-11 (CSB)
Two extremes must be avoided in this matter of spiritual self-examination. The first is the deception of a shallow examination. Sometimes we are so sure of ourselves that we fail to examine our hearts honestly and thoroughly. A quick glance into the mirror of the Word will never reveal the true situation (James 1:22–25). The second extreme is what I call a “perpetual autopsy.” Sometimes we get so wrapped up in self-examination that we become unbalanced. But we should not look only at ourselves, or we will become discouraged and defeated. We should look by faith to Jesus Christ and let Him forgive and restore us. Satan is the accuser (Rev. 12:10), and he enjoys it when we accuse and condemn ourselves!

Accountability
Nothingburger
A person’s insight gives him patience, and his virtue is to overlook an offense.
– Proverbs 19:11 (CSB)

Head Scratchers
Red flag
But speaking the truth in love, let us grow in every way into him who is the head—Christ. From Him the whole body, fitted and knit together by every supporting ligament, promotes the growth of the body for building itself up in love by the proper working of each individual part.
– Ephesians 4:15-16 (CSB)
The Word became flesh and dwelt  among us. We observed his glory, the glory as the one and only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.
– John 1:14 (CSB)
And be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving one another, just as God also forgave you in Christ.
– Ephesians 4:32 (CSB)
When a relationship is off, look in the mirror before you speak out.
Search me, God, and know my heart;
test me and know my concerns.
See if there is any offensive way in me;
lead me in the everlasting way.
– Psalm 139: 23-24 (CSB)

Discussion Questions //

  1. Share about a time when you had a small conflict with someone in the past. How did you handle that situation?
  2. Read Matthew 7:1-2. What do you think about “judging others?” Is that something you view positively? Negatively? Neutrally? Why? What do we learn about “judging others” from Jesus in this passage and elsewhere in the Bible?
  3. Read Matthew 7:3-5. Share about a situation you have done this well. What was the result of that versus a time you didn’t do it well?
  4. Read Ephesians 4:15. Do you struggle to speak the truth in love? What are you more prone to speak, grace or truth? How might you grow in doing both?
  5. What difference would it make in your life and the lives of others if each time you were hurt by someone or a conflict was brewing, you paused and prayed Psalm 139:23-24?
