Truth Is - Part 1 [Notes]

In a world where the very concept of truth is under attack, we are called upon to know the truth and be able to defend it (Jude 1:6). The truth can impact our relationship with God, and it can lead to true freedom (John 8:32). Unfortunately, many in our society no longer value the truth, and they don't know where to turn in order to find it. What are some ways in which our culture has strayed from the truth and how can we graciously stand firm as we face those in our society who look to undermine it? Join us this week for our new series!
Today's Takeaway // The truth matters.
The truth matters.
  • The truth can save us.
As He was saying these things, many believed in Him. So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed Him, "If you continue in My Word, you really are My disciples. You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free." "We are descendants of Abraham," they answered Him, "and we have never been enslaved to anyone. How can You say, 'You will become free'?" Jesus responded, "I assure you: Everyone who commits sin is a slave of sin."
– John 8:30-32 (HCSB)
Therefore, if the Son sets you free, you really will be free.
– John 8:36 (HCSB)
  • The truth can save us.
  • The truth can protect us.
The coming of the lawless one is based on Satan’s working, with all kinds of false miracles, signs, and wonders, and with every unrighteous deception among those who are perishing. They perish because they did not accept the love of the truth in order to be saved. For this reason God sends them a strong delusion so that they will believe what is false, so that all will be condemned—those who did not believe the truth but enjoyed unrighteousness.
– 2 Thessalonians 2:9-12 (HCSB)
For the time will come when they will not tolerate sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, will multiply teachers for themselves because they have an itch to hear something new. They will turn away from hearing the truth and will turn aside to myths.
– 2 Timothy 4:3-4 (HCSB)
Jesus told him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.
– John 14:6 (HCSB)
For God’s wrath is revealed from heaven against all godlessness and unrighteousness of people who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth since what can be known about God is evident among them, because God has shown it to them. For His invisible attributes, that is, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen since the creation of the world, being understood through what He has made. As a result, people are without excuse.
– Romans 1:18-20 (HCSB)
  • The truth can save us.
  • The truth can protect us.
  • The truth can help us grow in our faith.
Do not be conformed to this age,  but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may discern what is the good, pleasing, and perfect will of God.
– Romans 12:2 (HCSB)
But speaking the truth in love, let us grow in every way into Him who is the head—Christ. From Him the whole body, fitted and knit together by every supporting ligament, promotes the growth of the body for building up itself in love by the proper working of each individual part.
– Ephesians 4:15-16 (HCSB)
My brothers, if any among you strays from the truth, and someone turns him back, let him know that whoever turns a sinner from the error of his way will save his life from death and cover a multitude of sins.
– James 5:19-20 (HCSB)
The Truth Matters:
  • The truth can save us.
  • The truth can protect us.
  • The truth can help us grow in our faith.

Discussion Questions //

  1. Why do people believe lies? Can you think of some lies you used to believe but no longer do?
  2. Read Romans 1:18-20. Why do you think people sometimes don’t want to know the truth? Can you think of any examples where we are accountable to the truth even if we don’t know something is true?
  3. Read John 8:30-36. What are some ways in which the truth can set us free? Can you think of examples from your own life where the truth “saved” you in some way?
  4. Read 2 Timothy 2:15 and 2 Timothy 3:14-17. Why is it important we trust the Bible as one of  our main sources for truth? Where else can we turn in order to find the truth?
  5. What can we do to help people see the truth when they are closed to it?
  6. How might you apply today’s lesson to your life?
