Truth That Transforms

Truth Is – Part 1
Do not be conformed to this age, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may discern what is the good, pleasing, and perfect will of God.
— Romans 12:2
Whether we know it or not, and whether we like it or not, we are highly malleable beings. While we are not quite as free-flowing as a liquid, instantly conforming to the shape of our container, we are absolutely molded by our surroundings. As I look around at our context, our culture, I worry how we are all being shaped by it.

Unfortunately, this has been a problem that stretches back to the earliest days of human existence. Thankfully, Paul understood this problem and gave us the blueprint to resist being conformed to this world—“be transformed.” Not transform yourself, not pick yourself up by your bootstraps and fight back against the culture, but “be transformed.”

True transformation is not something that we can contrive on our own. It is something that happens to us as we abide in and with our Creator, make our home with Christ, and continually and constantly look to Him.

The late Pastor Tim Keller said, “What you need to drive out an old passion, is a new passion, a greater passion. What you need is an over-mastering positive passion….To the degree that you see Jesus on the cross, losing absolutely everything for you, He will become a beauty to you; He will become so beautiful in your eyes that you'll be able to change these things that control you now; they'll lose their power.”

True transformation is not something that we can contrive on our own. It is something that happens to us as we abide in and with our Creator, make our home with Christ, and continually and constantly look to Him.

The two ways I have found most effective at driving out my old passions and leading to the transformation Paul talks about are spending dedicated time in God’s Word every day and surrounding myself with God's people. My two encouragements, if you don’t want to be conformed to this world and want to be transformed, would be:

  1. To create a plan to read God’s Word every day so you can be immersed in the truth and your eyes can be fixed on Jesus.
  2. To commit to living life arm-in-arm with God’s people. Be with them as much as possible—at church, in each other's homes, and in your community. Read and study God’s Word together, hold each other accountable, pray for each other, eat together, have fun together, and care for one another.

I pray that as you do these two things, God will transform you from the inside out into more and more of someone who looks and loves like Jesus.
