ACTS of Prayer - Part 5
How often has someone shared a struggle or burden with you, and your immediate response was, “I’ll pray for you?” Now, be honest—how many times did you actually follow through? And how many times did you forget, get distracted, or even doubt whether your prayer would make a difference? If you’re anything like me, you’ve likely experienced both.

This Sunday, Pastor Josh Rhodes spoke about the importance of lifting others up in prayer. He reminded us that while it’s natural to pray for those closest to us—our family and friends—we are also called to pray for our neighbors, our leaders, and even those we may not particularly like or agree with. Prayer isn’t just for the people in our inner circle; it’s for the world around us.

I’ve witnessed firsthand the power of prayer. My own mother was once given only six months to live, but through God’s divine intervention, she lived another twelve years. At the time, our church was small—maybe ten people in total—but every single one of them prayed for her. They didn’t stop there; they also made sure we were added to prayer lists in other churches. Before we knew it, an overwhelming number of people were lifting my mother up in prayer. Some might call it a coincidence, but I know better. It was the power of God responding to the faithful prayers of His people.

Prayer isn’t powerful because of us—it’s powerful because of the God who hears it.

Mark 11:24 tells us, “Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.” The world wants us to believe that prayer is meaningless, and that it’s nothing more than wishful thinking. But Scripture teaches us otherwise. It teaches us that when we pray with faith, we should expect God to move. This doesn’t mean we always get the answer we want, but it does mean our prayers are heard and matter. Knowing this is incredibly freeing—we don’t have to carry our burdens alone, and we don’t have to feel helpless when those around us are struggling. We have the privilege of bringing everything—our needs, our worries, and our loved ones before a God who listens and cares.

Pastor Josh challenged us with a practical step this week: Make a list of the people you need to pray for. Start with your family and friends, then extend it to your neighbors, your community, and beyond. Write their names down, keep them in front of you, and commit to praying intentionally. Prayer isn’t powerful because of us—it’s powerful because of the God who hears it. Let’s not take that for granted.
