I Might Have a Problem…with My Schedule
Rocks = Essentials
Matthew 22:37-38: He said to him, "Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the greatest and most important command. The second is like it: Love your neighbor as yourself."

When the Pharisees heard that He had silenced the Sadducees, they came together. And one of them, an expert in the law, asked a question to test Him: “Teacher, which command in the law is the greatest?” He said to him, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the greatest and most important command. The second is like it: Love your neighbor as yourself. All the Law and the Prophets depend on these two commands.”
– Matthew 22: 34-40 (HCSB)
Deuteronomy 6:5: Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength.

Leviticus 19:18: Do not take revenge or bear a grudge against members of your community, but love your neighbor as yourself; I am Yahweh.
Spend your time with eternity in mind.
God is eternal.
Before the mountains were born, before You gave birth to the earth and the world, from eternity to eternity, You are God.
– Psalm 90:2 (HCSB)
People are eternal.
The Great Commission, Matthew 28:18-20
You are eternal.
Teach us to number our days carefully so that we may develop wisdom in our hearts.
– Psalm 90:12 (HCSB)

Discussion Questions //

  1. When it comes to your time for God—this essential “big rock”—what helps you stay consistent, and what tends to get pushed aside? How have practices like daily Bible reading (2 Timothy 3:16-17), prayer (Philippians 4:6-7), and worship gatherings (Hebrews 10:24-25) helped you love God as Jesus described in the Great Commandment (Matthew 22:34-40)?
  2. As we consider “love your neighbor as yourself” (Matthew 22:39), who in your life—family, friend, or neighbor—might be a “big rock” relationship that needs more of your intentional time and presence? What could that look like this coming week?
  3. How are you doing at lovingly caring for yourself—physically, emotionally, and spiritually—as an essential “big rock” that helps you live an abundant life and remain available for God’s work?
  4. What’s one “big rock” God may be prompting you to put—or put back—into your weekly rhythm this week? Are there any “pebbles” or “sand” that could go? What’s one small change you can make to help that happen?
  5. Close in prayer, asking God to help you “spend your time with eternity in mind.”
