31 - Part 4 [Notes]

Join us for 31, a month-long journey through the wisdom of Proverbs. Each Sunday, explore practical themes like work, parenting, and the power of our words while learning how godly wisdom can shape every area of our lives. With daily readings and Sunday messages, this series invites us to grow in our relationship with God and others by applying His truth in transformative ways.
Takeaway: If I want to be wise, I will welcome and grow from correction.
Don’t rebuke a mocker, or he will hate you; rebuke the wise, and he will love you. Instruct the wise, and they will be wiser still; teach the righteous, and they will learn more.
– Proverbs 9:8-9 (CSB)
Whoever loves discipline loves knowledge, but one who hates correction is stupid.
– Proverbs 12:1 (CSB)
If I want to be wise, I will welcome and grow from correction.
If I want to be wise, I will welcome and grow from correction.
Read – Proverbs 19
1 Better a poor person who lives with integrity than someone who has deceitful lips and is a fool.
2 Even zeal is not good without knowledge, and the one who acts hastily sins.
3 A person’s own foolishness leads him astray, yet his heart rages against the Lord.
4 Wealth attracts many friends, but a poor person is separated from his friend.
5 A false witness will not go unpunished, and one who utters lies will not escape.
6 Many seek a ruler’s favor, and everyone is a friend of one who gives gifts.
7 All the brothers of a poor person hate him; how much more do his friends keep their distance from him!
He may pursue them with words, but they are not there.
8 The one who acquires good sense loves himself; one who safeguards understanding finds success.
9 A false witness will not go unpunished, and one who utters lies perishes.
10 Luxury is not appropriate for a fool—how much less for a slave to rule over princes!
11 A person’s insight gives him patience, and his virtue is to overlook an offense.
12 A king’s rage is like the roaring of a lion, but his favor is like dew on the grass.
13 A foolish son is his father’s ruin, and a wife’s nagging is an endless dripping.
14 A house and wealth are inherited from fathers, but a prudent wife is from the Lord.
15 Laziness induces deep sleep, and a lazy person will go hungry.
16 The one who keeps commands preserves himself; one who disregards his ways will die.
17 Kindness to the poor is a loan to the Lord, and he will give a reward to the lender.,
18 Discipline your son while there is hope; don’t set your heart on being the cause of his death.,
19 A person with intense anger bears the penalty; if you rescue him, you’ll have to do it again.
20 Listen to counsel and receive instruction so that you may be wise later in life.,
21 Many plans are in a person’s heart, but the Lord’s decree will prevail.
22 What is desirable in a person is his fidelity; better to be a poor person than a liar.
23 The fear of the Lord leads to life; one will sleep at night without danger.
24 The slacker buries his hand in the bowl; he doesn’t even bring it back to his mouth!
25 Strike a mocker, and the inexperienced learn a lesson; rebuke the discerning, and he gains knowledge.
26 The one who plunders his father and evicts his mother is a disgraceful and shameful son.
27 If you stop listening to correction, my son, you will stray from the words of knowledge.
28 A worthless witness mocks justice, and a wicked mouth swallows iniquity.
29 Judgments are prepared for mockers, and beatings for the backs of fools.

Discipline your son while there is hope; don’t set your heart on being the cause of his death.
– Proverbs 19:18 (CSB)
"The command, discipline your son, is a strong warning against parental passivity. A child guilty of wrongdoings should be chastised in his early years while there is hope for him. To neglect such needed discipline may contribute to the child’s death … death is often the lot of the fool (Prov. 1:32), the wicked (Prov. 10:27), and the sluggard (Prov. 21:25)."
– Dr. S.S. Buzzell, Bible Knowledge Commentary
Your rod and Your staff—they comfort me.
– Psalm 23:4 (CSB)
All Scripture is inspired by God and is profitable for teaching, for rebuking, for correcting, for training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.
– 2 Timothy 3:16-17 (CSB)
When he  comes, he will convict the world about sin, righteousness, and judgment.
– John 16:8 (CSB)
If you live according to the flesh, you are going to die. But if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. For all those led by God’s Spirit are God’s sons.
– Romans 8:13-14 (CSB)

Discussion Questions //

  1. Did you grow up playing a sport or participating in a team activity? What was your experience like with your team and coach? How did they guide or correct you?
  2. How has God used His Word, His Spirit, or people to bring correction into your life? Can you recall a time when His correction, though difficult, ultimately helped you grow? Reflect on Hebrews 12:11, “No discipline seems enjoyable at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it.” How has God’s discipline brought long-term growth in your life?
  3. When dealing with others, how do you discern whether someone is wise, foolish, wicked, or a mocker? How can you apply patience and grace when offering correction, especially to those who are wise? Proverbs 19:11 reminds us, “A person’s insight gives him patience, and his virtue is to overlook an offense.” How can this guide your approach when dealing with others?
  4. How do you typically respond to feedback or correction? Proverbs 19:27 warns, “If you stop listening to correction, my son, you will stray from the words of knowledge.” Are there times when you’ve resisted correction and suffered because of it? What steps can you take to become more humble and open to feedback in your daily life?
  5. What is one specific step you can take this week to welcome and grow from correction? Is there someone you need to offer grace-filled feedback or correction to, or someone you need to thank for helping you grow?
