Foretold - Part 1 [Notes]

Although the Bible covers thousands of years of history and is filled with true stories and accounts, there is One Story that ties all the others together—the story of God’s plan to bring people into a relationship with Himself through the death and resurrection of His Son. This story is revealed throughout the Bible through prophecies, the Old Testament Law, and through God’s interactions with humanity.

Join us for our series leading up to Easter, Foretold, where we will look at some of the hidden messages of redemption found in Old Testament Bible stories.
Takeaway // Don't miss the message.
Now brothers, I want to clarify for you the gospel I proclaimed to you; you received it and have taken your stand on it. You are also saved by it, if you hold to the message I proclaimed to you—unless you believed for no purpose. For I passed on to you as most important what I also received: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, that He was buried, that He was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures.
– 1 Corinthians 15:1-4 (HCSB)
He here intimates that Christ’s death for our sins was the fulfillment of the divine counsel foretold in the Old Testament Scriptures. The use of the plural points to the long line of witnesses which runs through the various portions of the sacred record.
– J.P. Lange
1. Jesus’ ultimate victory: Genesis 3:15
I will put hostility between you and the woman, and between your seed and her seed. He will strike your head, and you will strike his heel.
– Genesis 3:15 (HCSB)
The serpent was instrumental in the undoing of the woman, and in turn the woman will ultimately bring down the serpent through her offspring…The impact delivered by the offspring of the woman “at the head” is mortal, while the serpent will deliver a blow only “at the heel.”
– K.A. Matthews
Satan would cripple mankind (you will strike at his heel), but the Seed, Christ, would deliver the fatal blow (He will crush your head).
– A.P. Ross
2. Jesus’ family line: Genesis 49:10
The scepter will not depart from Judah or the staff from between his feet until He whose right it is comes and the obedience of the peoples belongs to Him.
– Genesis 49:10 (HCSB)
Your house and kingdom will endure before Me forever, and your throne will be established forever.
– 2 Samuel 7:16 (HCSB)
3. Jesus’ birth: Micah 5:2
Bethlehem Ephrathah, you are small among the clans of Judah; One will come from you to be ruler over Israel for Me. His origin is from antiquity, from eternity.
– Micah 5:2 (HCSB)
He was chosen before the foundation of the world but was revealed at the end of the times for you who through Him are believers in God, who raised Him from the dead and gave Him glory, so that your faith and hope are in God.
– 1 Peter 1:20-21 (HCSB)
4. Jesus’ life and ministry: Isaiah 61:1-2
The Spirit of the Lord God is on Me, because the Lord has anointed Me to bring good news to the poor. He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives and freedom to the prisoners; to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor, and the day of our God’s vengeance; to comfort all who mourn.
– Isaiah 61:1-2 (HCSB)
5. Jesus’ death for the sins of the world: Isaiah 53:5-6, Psalm 22:16-18
But He was pierced because of our transgressions, crushed because of our iniquities; punishment for our peace was on Him, and we are healed by His wounds. We all went astray like sheep; we all have turned to our own way; and the Lord has punished Him for the iniquity of us all.
– Isaiah 53:5-6 (HCSB)
For dogs have surrounded me; a gang of evildoers has closed in on me; they pierced my hands and my feet. I can count all my bones; people look and stare at me. They divided my garments among themselves, and they cast lots for my clothing.
– Psalm 22:16-18
6. Jesus’ resurrection: Psalm 16:10
For You will not abandon me to Sheol; You will not allow Your Faithful One to see decay.
– Psalm 16:10 (HCSB)
7. Jesus’ eternal glory: Daniel 7:13-14
I continued watching in the night visions, and I saw One like a son of man coming with the clouds of heaven.  He approached the Ancient of Days and was escorted before Him. He was given authority to rule, and glory, and a kingdom; so that those of every people, nation, and language should serve Him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion that will not pass away, and His kingdom is one that will not be destroyed.
– Daniel 7:13-14 (HCSB)
