I Might Have a Problem - Part 3 [Notes]

You’re invited to join us for "I Might Have a Problem," a six-week series tackling real-life struggles that impact nearly everyone. Whether it’s spending too much time on your phone, struggling with money, running on empty, or dealing with thoughts you can’t seem to escape—this series is for you. We’ll explore what the Bible has to say about these challenges, and discover steps we can take to live with more purpose, peace, and freedom. Whether you know you have a problem—or just might have a problem—this series will help you, and the people you care about, take healthy steps forward. Modern problems. Biblical solutions.
Takeaway: Honor God in how you give, save, and live with His money.
I Might Have a Problem with My Money.
Honor God in how you give, save, and live with His money.
The earth and everything in it, the world and its inhabitants, belong to the Lord;
– Psalm 24:1
Honor God in how you give, save, and live with His money.
  • First, give generously
"Bring the full tenth into the storehouse so that there may be food in My house. Test Me in this way," says the Lord of Hosts. "See if I will not open the floodgates of heaven and pour out a blessing for you without measure. I will rebuke the devourer for you, so that it will not ruin the produce of your land, and your vine in your field will not fail to produce fruit," says the Lord of Hosts.
– Malachi 3:10-11 (HCSB)
And Abram gave him a tenth of everything.
– Genesis 14:20b (HCSB)
Remember this: the person who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and the person who sows generously will also reap generously. Each person should do as he has decided in his heart—not reluctantly or out of necessity, for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to make every grace overflow to you, so that in every way, always having everything you need, you may excel in every good work.
– 2 Corinthians 9:6-8 (HCSB)
How can I repay the Lord for all the good He has done for me?
– Psalm 116:12 (HCSB)
“Don’t collect for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal. But collect for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys, and where thieves don’t break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. … No one can be a slave of two masters, since either he will hate one and love the other, or be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot be slaves of God and of money.
– Matthew 6:19-21, 24 (HCSB)
“But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be provided for you.”
– Matthew 6:33 (HCSB)
It is more blessed to give than to receive.
– Acts 20:35b (HCSB)
Honor God in how you give, save, and live with His money.
  • First, give generously
  • Second, save wisely
Go to the ant, you slacker! Observe its ways and become wise. Without leader, administrator, or ruler, it prepares its provisions in summer; it gathers its food during harvest. How long will you stay in bed, you slacker? When will you get up from your sleep? A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the arms to rest, and your poverty will come like a robber, your need, like a bandit.
– Proverbs 6:6-8 (HCSB)
A good man leaves an inheritance to his grandchildren, but the sinner’s wealth is stored up for the righteous.
– Proverbs 13:22 (HCSB)
“A morally good man is so blessed that he can help his grandchildren by including them in his will. But any wealth a sinner may acquire is lost and eventually passes into the hands of the righteous. Perhaps this comes about by the sinner’s foolish and unwise handling of his funds.”
– Dr. S.S. Buzzell, Bible Knowledge Commentary
Honor God in how you give, save, and live with His money.
  • First, give generously
  • Second, save wisely
  • Third, live within your means
The rich rule over the poor, and the borrower is a slave to the lender.
– Proverbs 22:7 (HCSB)
I don’t say this out of need, for I have learned to be content in whatever circumstances I am. I know both how to have a little, and I know how to have a lot. In any and all circumstances I have learned the secret of being content—whether well fed or hungry, whether in abundance or in need. I am able to do all things through Him who strengthens me.
– Philippians 4:11-13 (HCSB):
Your life should be free from the love of money. Be satisfied with what you have, for He Himself has said, I will never leave you or forsake you.
– Hebrews 13:5 (HCSB)
“It is human nature to want it and want it now; it is also a sign of immaturity. Being willing to delay pleasure for a greater result is a sign of maturity.”
– Dave Ramsey, The Total Money Makeover
If you live like no one else now, later you can live and give like no one else.”
– Dave Ramsey

Discussion Questions //

  1. What was your first paying job? Do you remember how it felt to get your first paycheck? Has your view of money changed since then?
  2. Give Generously. Read Malachi 3:10 and 2 Corinthians 9:6–8. What do these verses say about why we give and how we should give? Why do you think it’s a struggle for many people to give generously?
  3. Save Wisely. Read Proverbs 6:6–8 and Proverbs 21:20. How do these verses highlight the wisdom of saving and building margin? Why do you think it’s difficult for most people to save wisely?
  4. Live Within Your Means. Read Philippians 4:11–13. What does Paul’s example teach us about contentment, even in times of lack? Why do you think it’s a struggle for many people to be content and live within their means?
  5. Honor God in how you give, save, and live with His money. Take a moment to reflect on that statement, and then discuss:
    – What’s one small step you can take to give more generously?
    – What’s one small step you can take to save more wisely?
    – What’s one small step you can take to live within your means?
