Welcome to The Ridge - Part 2 [Notes]

You’re invited to join us for “Welcome To The Ridge,” a six-week series focused on our past, present, and future as a church. Whether you’ve been at The Ridge for a month, a year, ten years, or thirty, our hope is that this series will give us all a clear, compelling, and unifying vision of who we are, where we’ve been, where we are, and where God is leading us in the future. Each week, we’ll study a different Bible passage that has shaped us, guided us, and kept us focused. This series is not only for those who call The Ridge home, but it’s also a perfect opportunity to invite others to come and experience it with you. Welcome To The Ridge!
Takeaway: We have the privilege of joining Jesus in his mission to seek and save the lost.
We have the privilege of joining Jesus in his mission to seek and save the lost.
For the Son of Man has come to seek and to save the lost.
– Luke 19:10 (HCSB)
The term lost is used in the Bible and in Christian circles to refer to people who have not yet found eternal life in Christ. Those who are spiritually lost are separated from God and unable to find their way back to Him.
– Gotquestions.org
Being spiritually lost refers to a state in which an individual is separated from the life, guidance, and saving relationship that originates from the Creator. This condition is characterized by a lack of reconciliation with God, resulting in spiritual disorientation, a void in true purpose, and the absence of eternal hope.
– Bible Hub
He entered Jericho and was passing through. There was a man named Zacchaeus who was a chief tax collector, and he was rich. He was trying to see who Jesus was, but he was not able because of the crowd, since he was a short man. So running ahead, he climbed up a sycamore tree to see Jesus, since He was about to pass that way.
– Luke 19:1-4 (HCSB)
This system, under which an officer gained his income by extorting more money from the people than he had contracted to pay the Roman government, had evidently worked well for Zacchaeus.
– Liefeld
After he heard this, he became extremely sad, because he was very rich. Seeing that he became sad, Jesus said, "How hard it is for those who have wealth to enter the kingdom of God!"
– Luke 18:23-25 (HCSB)
When Jesus came to the place, He looked up and said to him, “Zacchaeus, hurry and come down because today I must stay at your house.”  So he quickly came down and welcomed Him joyfully. All who saw it began to complain, “He’s gone to lodge with a sinful man!” But Zacchaeus stood there and said to the Lord, “Look, I’ll give half of my possessions to the poor, Lord! And if I have extorted anything from anyone, I’ll pay back four times as much!” “Today salvation has come to this house,” Jesus told him, “because he too is a son of Abraham. For the Son of Man has come to seek and to save the lost.”
– Luke 19:5-10 (HCSB)
“Today salvation has come to this house,” Jesus told him, “because he too is a son of Abraham. For the Son of Man has come to seek and to save the lost.”
– Luke 19:9-10 (HCSB)
“Today salvation has come to this house,” Jesus told him, “because he too is a son of Abraham.”
– Luke 19:9a (HCSB)
Just as Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him for righteousness, then understand that those who have faith are Abraham’s sons.
– Galatians 3:6-7 (HCSB)
for you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus.
– Galatians 3:26 (HCSB)
And if you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s seed, heirs according to the promise.
– Galatians 3:29 (HCSB)
We have the privilege of joining Jesus in his mission to seek and save the lost.

Discussion Questions //

  1. Have you ever been lost? If so, what was it like?
  2. Read Luke 19:10. What do you think it means to be spiritually lost?
  3. Why should we care about the spiritual condition of other people?
  4. Read Luke 19:1-10. Why do you think the people were so bothered that Jesus would stay with Zaccaheus? Why do you think we, as Christians, are so quick to judge others instead of caring about their spiritual welfare?
  5. If Jesus came to seek and to save the lost, what are some practical things we can do to carry on his work?
  6. How might you apply today’s lesson to your life?
