Path of Victory - Part 5 [Notes]

You’re invited to join us for "The Path of Victory"—a six-week journey through the life of Jesus. From His humble beginnings to His life-changing ministry, and ultimately to His death and victorious resurrection, we’ll follow His story all the way to Easter Sunday and beyond. Along the way, we’ll explore six defining attributes of Jesus and ask God to shape and grow these same transformational qualities in our own lives as His followers.
Takeaway: Jesus modeled love through His life and His death
"Before the Passover Festival, Jesus knew that His hour had come to depart from this world to the Father. Having loved His own who were in the world, He loved them to the end."
— John 13:1 (HCSB)
"Jesus had loved his own all along; he now showed them the full extent of his love."
– D.A. Carson
• Sunday: the triumphant (or triumphal) entry
Rejoice greatly, Daughter Zion! Shout in triumph, Daughter Jerusalem! Look, your King is coming to you; He is righteous and victorious, humble and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal (fol) of a donkey
— Zechariah 9:9 (HCSB)
• Monday: the clearing of the temple
"Is it not written, My house will be called a house of prayer for all nations? But you have made it a den of thieves!”
– Mark 11:17b (HCSB)
• Tuesday: a day of teaching
• Wednesday: the silent day of Passion Week
• Thursday: the last supper and Jesus' arrest
"Strike the shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered;"
— Zechariah 13:7b (HCSB)
• Friday: the trials, crucifixion and burial of Jesus
"My God, my God, why have You forsaken me? Why are You so far from my deliverance and from my words of groaning?"
– Psalm 22:1 (HCSB)
"Everyone who sees me mocks me; they sneer and shake their heads: “He relies on the Lord; let Him rescue him; let the Lord deliver him, since He takes pleasure in him.”
— Psalm 22:7-8 (HCSB)
"For dogs have surrounded me; a gang of evildoers has closed in on me; they pierced my hands and my feet."
— Psalm 22:16 (HCSB)
"They divided my garments among themselves, and they cast lots for my clothing"
— Psalm 22:18 (HCSB)
• Saturday: the "Great Sabbath," a day of silence
• Sunday: the resurrection
  1. The triumphant entry revealed Jesus’ love for the people of Israel.
"As He approached and saw the city, He wept over it, saying, “If you knew this day what would bring peace—but now it is hidden from your eyes. For the days will come on you when your enemies will build an embankment against you, surround you, and hem you in on every side. They will crush you and your children within you to the ground, and they will not leave one stone on another in you."
— Luke 19:41-44a (HCSB)
…because you did not recognize the time of your visitation.– Luke 19:44b (HCSB)
2. The clearing of the temple revealed his love for his Heavenly Father.
"He went into the temple complex and began to throw out those who were selling, and He said, 'It is written, My house will be a house of prayer, but you have made it a den of thieves!'"
— Luke 19:45-46 (HCSB)
3. The Last Supper revealed his love for his friends
"Before the Passover Festival, Jesus knew that His hour had come to depart from this world to the Father. Having loved His own who were in the world,  He loved them to the end."
– John 13:1 (HCSB)
"So He got up from supper, laid aside His robe,  took a towel, and tied it around Himself. Next, He poured water into a basin and began to wash His disciples’ feet and to dry them with the towel tied around Him."
– John 13:5 (HCSB)
"No one has greater love than this, that someone would lay down his life for his friends... I have called you friends, because I have made known to you everything I have heard from My Father."
— John 15:13b (HCSB)
4. While on the cross, He revealed His love for His family
"When Jesus saw His mother and the disciple He loved  standing there, He said to His mother, “Woman, here is your son.” Then He said to the disciple, “Here is your mother.” And from that hour the disciple took her into his home."
– John 19:26-27 (HCSB)
5. Jesus' death and resurrection revealed His love for all of humanity
For God loved the world in this way: He gave His One and Only Son, so that everyone who believes in Him will not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send His Son into the world that He might condemn the world, but that the world might be saved through Him.
– John 3:16-17 (HCSB)
Anyone who believes in Him is not condemned, but anyone who does not believe is already condemned, because he has not believed in the name of the One and Only Son of God.
– John 3:18 (HCSB)
For Jesus, love was a matter of life and death
