Cover to Cover - Part 5 [Notes]

You are invited to Cover to Cover, a five-week series designed to equip and inspire you to start 2026 in God’s Word. Each week, we’ll study a key biblical figure who knew, loved, and lived by God’s Word. From Moses, David, Mary, Paul, and Jesus, we’ll learn from their examples and discover how essential the Bible is to our lives – cover to cover.
Takeaway: Living God’s Word points people to the Word
Cover to Cover
Week 1: Moses – Listening to God’s Word leads to life
Week 2: David – Cherishing God’s Word helps us cherish Him
Week 3: Mary – Memorizing God’s Word fills our hearts with His truth
Week 4: Paul – Standing on God’s Word is a firm foundation
Week 5: Jesus – Living God’s Word points people to the Word
Then Jesus spoke to the crowds and to his disciples: “The scribes and the Pharisees are seated in the chair of Moses. Therefore do whatever they tell you, and observe it. But don’t do what they do, because they don’t practice what they teach. They tie up heavy loads that are hard to carry and put them on people’s shoulders, but they themselves aren’t willing to lift a finger to move them.
– Matthew 23:1-4 (CSB)
Hypocrite / Hypocrisy (hypókrisis, hypokritēs): acting; an actor with a mask; pretending to be something you’re not, especially in matters of religion and morality
“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! You clean the outside of the cup and dish, but inside they are full of greed and self-indulgence. Blind Pharisee! First clean the inside of the cup, so that the outside of it may also become clean. “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! You are like whitewashed tombs, which appear beautiful on the outside, but inside are full of the bones of the dead and every kind of impurity. In the same way, on the outside you seem righteous to people, but inside you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness.
– Matthew 23:25-28 (CSB)
Jesus lived out Deuteronomy 6:4-5 – Love God
“Listen, Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength.”
– Deuteronomy 6:4-5 (CSB)
Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, He got up, went out, and made His way to a deserted place; and there He was praying.
– Mark 1:35 (CSB)
“He went out and made His way as usual to the Mount of Olives, and the disciples followed Him. When He reached the place, He told them, ‘Pray that you may not fall into temptation.’ Then He withdrew from them about a stone’s throw, knelt down, and began to pray, ‘Father, if you are willing, take this cup away from Me. Nevertheless, not My will, but Yours, be done.’
– Luke 22:39-42 (CSB)
Jesus lived out Deuteronomy 6:4-5 – Love God
Jesus lived out Leviticus 19:18 – Love your neighbor
Do not take revenge or bear a grudge against members of your community, but love your neighbor as yourself; I am the Lord.
– Leviticus 19:18 (CSB)
As Jesus went on from there, He saw a man named Matthew sitting at the tax office, and He said to him, ‘Follow Me,’ and he got up and followed Him. While He was reclining at the table in the house, many tax collectors and sinners came to eat with Jesus and His disciples. When the Pharisees saw this, they asked His disciples, ‘Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?’”
– Matthew 9:9–11 (CSB)
This is my command: Love one another as I have loved you. No one has greater love than this: to lay down his life for his friends.
– John 15:12-13 (CSB)
Jesus lived out Deuteronomy 6:4-5 – Love God
Jesus lived out Leviticus 19:18 – Love your neighbor
Jesus lived out Matthew 5:43-44 – Love your enemies
You have heard that it was said, Love your neighbor and hate your enemy. 44 But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you.
– Matthew 5:43-44 (CSB)
Two others–criminals–were also led away to be executed with Him. When they arrived at the place called The Skull, they crucified Him there, along with the criminals, one on the right and one on the left. Then Jesus said, ‘Father, forgive them, because they do not know what they are doing.’”
– Luke 23:32–34a (CSB)
Living God’s Word points people to the Word
On the night when He was betrayed, the Lord Jesus took bread, and when He had given thanks, broke it, and said, “This is my body, which is for you. Do this in remembrance of me.”
– 1 Corinthians 11:23b-24 (CSB)
In the same way also He took the cup, after supper, and said, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.” For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until He comes.
– 1 Corinthians 11:25-26 (CSB)
