Dollars & Sense - Part 2

Money touches almost every part of our lives—and for many of us, it’s a source of stress, guilt, or fear. Whether it’s debt, past mistakes, or pressure to keep up, the world’s way of handling money isn’t really working. We’re diving into Dollars & Sense, a four-week series on how to view and use money God’s way. This isn’t about getting something from you—it’s about giving you peace, freedom, and joy in an area of life that so often brings stress. We’ll explore big questions: Are we owners or stewards? What does it really mean to give? How can we live within our means? And ultimately, can we trust God with our finances like we trust Him with our eternity?
Takeaway: Have To or Get To? Giving to God is a blessing, not a burden.
Week 1: Owners or Stewards? How we view money shapes how we use it.
Week 2: Have To or Get To? Giving to God is a blessing, not a burden.
Key Biblical Words for Giving
  • Tithe, tithes, tithing (a tenth)
And Abram gave him a tenth of everything.
– Genesis 14:20b (CSB)
Every tenth of the land’s produce, grain from the soil or fruit from the trees, belongs to the Lord; it is holy to the Lord. If a man decides to redeem any part of this tenth, he must add a fifth to its value. Every tenth animal from the herd or flock, which passes under the shepherd’s rod, will be holy to the Lord.
– Leviticus 27:30-32 (CSB)
1 Corinthians 9:13-14
Bring the full tenth into the storehouse so that there may be food in my house. Test me in this way,” says the Lord of Armies. “See if I will not open the floodgates of heaven and pour out a blessing for you without measure.”
–  Malachi 3:10 (CSB)
Key Biblical Words for Giving
  • Tithe, tithes, tithing (a tenth)
  • Offering, offerings
The Lord spoke to Moses: “Tell the Israelites to take an offering for me. You are to take my offering from everyone who is willing to give.
– Exodus 25:1-2 (CSB)
Key Biblical Words for Giving
  • Tithe, tithes, tithing (a tenth)
  • Offering, offerings
  • Give, giving
 Matthew 23:23
But when you give to the poor, don’t let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.
– Matthew 6:3-4 (CSB)
Matthew 6:24
“It is more blessed to give than to receive.
– Acts 20:35b (CSB)
Key Biblical Words for Giving
  • Tithe, tithes, tithing (a tenth)
  • Offering, offerings
  • Give, giving
  • Generous, generosity
The point is this: The person who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and the person who sows generously will also reap generously. Each person should do as he has decided in his heart—not reluctantly or out of compulsion, since God loves a cheerful giver.
– 2 Corinthians 9:6-7 (CSB)
In the Old Testament, God’s people were required to give a tithe of the increase in their crops and flocks. Although we are no longer under the Old Testament Law, we believe that Old Testament tithing provides a model for New Testament giving.
Have To or Get To? Giving to God is a blessing, not a burden.
  • We get to show our love and gratitude to God through giving.
Matthew 26:6-13
How can I repay the Lord for all the good He has done for me?
– Psalm 116:12 (CSB)
Have To or Get To? Giving to God is a blessing, not a burden.
  • We get to show our love and gratitude to God through giving.
  • We get to impact lives today and for eternity through giving.
They sold their possessions and property and distributed the proceeds to all, as any had need.
– Acts 2:45 (CSB)
I give thanks to my God for every remembrance of you, always praying with joy for all of you in my every prayer, because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now.
– Philippians 1:3-5 (CSB)
Not that I seek the gift, but I seek the profit that is increasing to your account.
– Philippians 4:17 (CSB)
Have To or Get To? Giving to God is a blessing, not a burden.
  • We get to show our love and gratitude to God through giving.
  • We get to impact lives today and for eternity through giving.
  • We get to experience joy and reward through giving.
It is more blessed to give than to receive.”
– Acts 20:35b (CSB)
Don’t store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys, and where thieves don’t break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
– Matthew 6:19-21 (CSB)
For God loved the world in this way: He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in Him will not perish but have eternal life.
– John 3:16 (CSB)
Have To or Get To? Giving to God is a blessing, not a burden.
