Path of Victory - Part 4 [Notes]

You’re invited to join us for "The Path of Victory"—a six-week journey through the life of Jesus. From His humble beginnings to His life-changing ministry, and ultimately to His death and victorious resurrection, we’ll follow His story all the way to Easter Sunday and beyond. Along the way, we’ll explore six defining attributes of Jesus and ask God to shape and grow these same transformational qualities in our own lives as His followers.
Takeaway: The power to live for Christ comes from abiding in Christ.
Miracle: dynamis (δύναμις), literally means power
Commonly translated as: miracle; miraculous sign; mighty work
Abiding
“I am the vine; you are the branches. The one who remains in Me and I in him produces much fruit, because you can do nothing without Me.”
– John 15:5 (HCSB)
Our power to live for Christ comes from abiding in Christ.
How many miracles did Jesus perform?
What kinds of miracles did Jesus perform?
Jesus performed many other signs in the presence of His disciples that are not written in this Book. But these are written so that you may believe Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and by believing you may have life in His Name.
–John 20:30-31 (HCSB)
This is the disciple who testifies to these things and who wrote them down. We know that his testimony is true. And there are also many other things that Jesus did, which, if every one of them were written down, I suppose not even the world itself could contain the books that would be written.
– John 21:24-25 (HCSB)
What was the purpose of Jesus’ miracles?
“The major body of the Gospel of John is contained in a ‘Book of Signs’ (2:1–12:50) which embraces seven miracles or ‘signs’ which proclaim Jesus as the Messiah, the Son of God. This ‘Book of Signs’ also contains great discourses of Jesus which explain and proclaim the significance of the signs. For example, following the feeding of the 5,000, Jesus revealed Himself as the Bread of Life which the heavenly Father gives for the life of the world.”
– Dr. Edwin Blum, Bible Knowledge Commentary
Part 1: John 11:1-16, Setting the Scene
Now Jesus loved Martha, her sister, and Lazarus.
– John 11:5 (HCSB)
This sickness will not end in death but is for the glory of God, so that the Son of God may be glorified through it.
– John 11:4 (HCSB)
Part 2: John 11:17–27, Jesus Arrives
When Jesus arrived, He found that Lazarus had already been in the tomb four days. Bethany was near Jerusalem (about two miles away). Many of the Jews had come to Martha and Mary to comfort them about their brother. As soon as Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went to meet Him. But Mary remained seated in the house. Then Martha said to Jesus, “Lord, if You had been here, my brother wouldn’t have died. Yet even now I know that whatever You ask from God, God will give You.” “Your brother will rise again,” Jesus told her. Martha said, “I know that he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day.” Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in Me, even if he dies, will live. Everyone who lives and believes in Me will never die—ever. Do you believe this?” “Yes, Lord,” she told Him, “I believe You are the Messiah, the Son of God, who comes into the world.”
– John 11:17-27 (HCSB)
Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in Me, even if he dies, will live.
– John 11:25 (HCSB)
Yes, Lord,” she told Him, “I believe You are the Messiah, the Son of God, who comes into the world.”
– John 11:27 (HCSB)
Part 3: John 11:28–36, Jesus Wept
Having said this, she went back and called her sister Mary, saying in private, “The Teacher is here and is calling for you.” As soon as she heard this, she got up quickly and went to Him. Jesus had not yet come into the village but was still in the place where Martha had met Him. The Jews who were with her in the house consoling her saw that Mary got up quickly and went out. So they followed her, supposing that she was going to the tomb to cry there. When Mary came to where Jesus was and saw Him, she fell at His feet and told Him, “Lord, if You had been here, my brother would not have died!” When Jesus saw her crying, and the Jews who had come with her crying, He was angry in His spirit and deeply moved. “Where have you put him?” He asked. “Lord,” they told Him, “come and see.” Jesus wept.  So the Jews said, “See how He loved him!” But some of them said, “Couldn’t He who opened the blind man’s eyes also have kept this man from dying?”
– John 11:28-36 (HCSB)
“Jesus wept.”
– John 11:35 (HCSB)
Part 4: John 11:38–44, The Miracle
Then Jesus, angry in Himself again, came to the tomb. It was a cave, and a stone was lying against it. “Remove the stone,” Jesus said. Martha, the dead man’s sister, told Him, “Lord, he’s already decaying. It’s been four days.” Jesus said to her, “Didn’t I tell you that if you believed you would see the glory of God?” So they removed the stone. Then Jesus raised His eyes and said, “Father, I thank You that You heard Me.  know that You always hear Me, but because of the crowd standing here I said this, so they may believe You sent Me.” After He said this, He shouted with a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out!” The dead man came out bound hand and foot with linen strips and with his face wrapped in a cloth. Jesus said to them, “Loose him and let him go.”
– John 11:38-44 (HCSB)
Jesus said to her, “Didn’t I tell you that if you believed you would see the glory of God?”
– John 11:40 (HCSB)
So they removed the stone. Then Jesus raised His eyes and said, “Father, I thank You that You heard Me. I know that You always hear Me, but because of the crowd standing here I said this, so they may believe You sent Me.”
– John 11:41 (HCSB)
The power to live for Christ comes from abiding in Christ.
Yes, Lord,” she told Him, “I believe You are the Messiah, the Son of God, who comes into the world.”
– John 11:27 (HCSB)
I am able to do all things through Him who strengthens me.
– Philippians 4:13 (HCSB)

Discussion Questions //

  1. Can you think of a moment in your life—or someone else’s—that felt like a “miracle”? What made it feel that way?
  2. Which of Jesus’ miracles do you find most fascinating, and why does it stand out to you?
  3. Read John 11:5: “Now Jesus loved Martha, her sister, and Lazarus.” What stands out to you about Jesus’ relationship with Mary, Martha, and Lazarus in John 11 and Luke 10? How does that shape how you view Jesus as fully God and fully human?
  4. Read John 11:35: “Jesus wept.” Even though He knew resurrection was coming, Jesus still wept. What does that teach us about His humanity and how He responds to our grief and pain?
  5. Read John 11:43–44: “After He said this, He shouted with a loud voice, ‘Lazarus, come out!’ The dead man came out bound hand and foot with linen strips and with his face wrapped in a cloth. Jesus said to them, ‘Loose him and let him go.” Try to imagine being there and seeing this moment with your own eyes. How do you think you would have responded? How would it have shaped your view of Jesus?
  6. Jesus relied on the will of the Father and the power of the Holy Spirit to carry out His ministry. What might “abiding in Christ” look like for you this week? What’s one area where you know you need God’s power to help you live for Him?
