Great is Thy Faithfulness

Great is Thy Faithfulness

Remember
I love the Memorial Day holiday. It is one of my favorite memories of growing up. As a preschool girl, I remember holding my dad’s hand as we walked “upstreet” to the annual parade and went to the Memorial service afterward. When I was in elementary school, we would march with our class in the parade holding American flags, and as a teenager, I marched with the junior high and high school band. These times were wonderful times of remembering.

On Sunday, Pastor Bruce encouraged us not to forget to remember about our God. He reminded us that this is a purposeful action on our part, for God has been faithful to us.
Because of the Lord’s faithful love we do not perish, for His mercies never end. They are new every morning; Great is Your faithfulness! I say: The Lord is my portion, therefore I will put my hope in Him. The Lord is good to those who wait for Him, to the person who seeks Him.
– Lamentations 3:22-25
As I have grown in my relationship with the Lord, there have been times when remembering God’s faithfulness has come in the midst of great sorrow. This past weekend, I attended the funeral of  my 39-year-old-cousin, who passed away after a brief four-day illness. He leaves behind a wife and six children. Remembering God’s faithfulness in this time of sorrow can be overwhelming; yet as my sister and I attended, we were overwhelmed by the love demonstrated by the church family towards Brenden’s family. They truly modeled God's faithfulness in the midst of this storm in life.

It is important to realize that God’s character is often seen through the many circumstances of life. Being able to experience this deep abiding love is foundational to knowing who God is, what He has done, what He will do, and the depth of His love that is encompassed around us.

God’s faithfulness is purposeful, and you must be purposeful in growing your relationship with Him.

One promise of God’s faithfulness that I was reminded of this week is found in Isaiah 41:10. This verse says, “Do not fear, for I am with you; do not be afraid, for I am your God. I will strengthen you; I will help you; I will hold on to you with My righteous right hand.”

This word picture reminds me of my walk holding onto my dad’s hand. There was no safer place to be. Amid this walk with God, His faithfulness is strong. He is holding tightly to you and me. God’s faithfulness is purposeful, and you must be purposeful in growing your relationship with Him. Meditate on His Word, journal how He is at work in your life, memorize His Word, and rest in Him.

For great is His faithfulness!
Great is Thy faithfulness,
Great is Thy faithfulness,
Morning by morning new mercies I see!
All I have needed Thy hand hath provided.
Great is Thy faithfulness, Lord, unto me!
– Thomas O. Chisholm, Great Is Thy Faithfulness (1923)
