Suffering

Suffering

On Sunday, Pastor Josh Rhodes reminded us of an often-overlooked truth: suffering for our faith is not just something Jesus warned us about but something He shared in, for our sake. As Christians, we’re called not only to endure hardship but to see it as an honor—a mark of our shared identity with Christ. This truth can deepen our understanding of faith, especially in light of the global Church’s challenges.

The hardships we face are temporary compared to the eternal glory that awaits, where joy will be complete.

Peter’s words in 1 Peter 4:12-19 speak to the reality of suffering for Christ. In verse 12, Peter tells believers not to be surprised by trials. In his time, early Christians endured fierce persecution under leaders like Nero, who resorted to unspeakable cruelties to punish them. Today, while most of us in the US may not face such severe threats, the message remains relevant. Faith in Christ may mean rejection, misunderstanding, or even mistreatment from others in our culture. Peter reminds us that these difficulties are not out of the ordinary but expected as we walk the Christian path.
Dear friends, don’t be surprised when the fiery ordeal comes among you to test you as if something unusual were happening to you. Instead, rejoice as you share in the sufferings of the Messiah, so that you may also rejoice with great joy at the revelation of His glory. If you are ridiculed for the name of Christ, you are blessed, because the Spirit of glory and of God rests on you. None of you, however, should suffer as a murderer, a thief, an evildoer, or a meddler.[c] 16 But if anyone suffers as a “Christian,” he should not be ashamed but should glorify God in having that name. For the time has come for judgment to begin with God’s household, and if it begins with us, what will the outcome be for those who disobey the gospel of God?

And if a righteous person is saved with difficulty,
what will become of the ungodly and the sinner?

So those who suffer according to God’s will should, while doing what is good, entrust themselves to a faithful Creator.
– 1 Peter 4:12-19
Even in suffering, we can rejoice. Peter offers this perspective in verses 13-14, where he encourages us to find joy in sharing in Christ’s suffering because it unites us with Him. Like a soldier following their commander into battle, we are blessed to walk in the footsteps of Jesus. The hardships we face are temporary compared to the eternal glory that awaits, where joy will be complete. For now, our trials are proof of God’s Spirit within us, who strengthens us in our faith journey.

It’s essential to remember why Christians may face hardship. Peter clarifies that it’s not suffering for wrongdoing but for the name of Christ that we honor God. Carrying Christ’s name is a privilege that means we might be misunderstood or even disliked because, as Jesus said in John 15:18, “If the world hates you, understand that it hated Me before it hated you.” As lights in a world that loves darkness, our very existence can highlight what some try to hide, causing conflict.

How, then, should we respond to suffering? Peter closes in verse 19 by urging believers to “entrust themselves to a faithful Creator.” We’re called to continue doing good, to live with integrity, and to trust God fully, even when faced with hardships. Jesus Himself experienced rejection, yet He remained faithful, ultimately finding victory through suffering.

In this, we see a call to pray for our persecuted brothers and sisters, prepare our hearts to endure challenges, and trust that in suffering, we are united with Christ. Remember: it is an honor to suffer for Jesus, for He suffered for us.
