Anchored - Part 3 [Notes]

In a world full of uncertainties, how can we stay rooted in our faith? Join us for "Anchored," a five-week series through 1 Peter, where we’ll discover how Christ and His Word give us strength to face life’s storms. We’ll explore how the hope of eternal life, trusting God through political uncertainties, navigating family relationships with grace, confronting the reality of suffering for our faith, and standing strong as a church family in challenging times anchor us in Him. This series reminds us that when we’re anchored in Christ, we can endure anything life throws our way with hope and joy.
Takeaway: Holy living starts at home.
Holy living starts at home.
In the same way, wives, submit yourselves to your own husbands so that, even if some disobey the Christian message, they may be won over without a message by the way their wives live when they observe your pure, reverent lives.
– 1 Peter 3:1-2 (HCSB)
“A wife should not acquire her own friends, but should make her husband’s friends her own. The gods are first and most significant friends. For this reason, it is proper for a wife to recognize only those gods who her husband worships.”
– Plutarch (c. A.D. 46-127)
Submission is the voluntary placement of oneself under the authority and leadership of another. Submission is taught in the context of various relationships. In divinely ordained relationships, submission enables a unique Christian harmony based on God's good design.

when they observe your pure, reverent lives.
– 1 Peter 3:2 (HCSB)
In the same way, let your light shine before men, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven.
– Matthew 5:16 (HCSB)
Your beauty should not consist of outward things like elaborate hairstyles and the wearing of gold ornaments or fine clothes. Instead, it should consist of what is inside the heart with the imperishable quality of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is very valuable in God’s eyes.
– 1 Peter 3:3-4 (HCSB)
The gentle are blessed, for they will inherit the earth.
– Matthew 5:5 (HCSB)
For in the past, the holy women who put their hope in God also beautified themselves in this way, submitting to their own husbands, just as Sarah obeyed Abraham, calling him lord. You have become her children when you do what is good and are not frightened by anything alarming.
– 1 Peter 3:5-6 (HCSB)
Holy living starts at home.
Husbands, in the same way, live with your wives with an understanding of their weaker nature yet showing them honor as coheirs of the grace of life, so that your prayers will not be hindered.
– 1 Peter 3:7 (HCSB)
Husbands, in the same way, live with your wives with an understanding of their weaker nature yet showing them honor as coheirs of the grace of life, so that your prayers will not be hindered.
The eyes of the Lord are on the righteous, and His ears are open to their prayer, but the face of the Lord is against those who do evil.
– 1 Peter 3:12 (HCSB)

Discussion Questions //

  1. Pastor Josh shared about giving his wife Valentine’s Day sushi instead of roses. What is something that you’ve learned about your spouse, or another loved one, over time?
  2. For the women, how do modern cultural values of independence, or the fact that no one is perfect, affect your view of the biblical teaching of submission? Also, how does today’s culture make it difficult to remember that your worth comes from who you are in Christ, not from your outward appearance or achievements? How do you remind yourself of this truth?
  3. For the men, what does it look like to honor and serve the women in your life—whether that be your wife, daughters, granddaughters, or others? Also, where do you feel you can grow in honoring and loving them as Christ loves the church?
  4. What are some specific ways we can make sure our homes reflect the values of love, honor, and respect that we’ve talked about today? How can we apply these teachings to all of our family relationships—whether that be with parents, siblings, children, or even extended family?
  5. What’s one step you can take this week to ensure that “holy living starts at home” in your own life? Whether it’s with your spouse, children, or another family member, how can you put today’s message into action?
