Anchored - Part 2 [Notes]

In a world full of uncertainties, how can we stay rooted in our faith? Join us for "Anchored," a five-week series through 1 Peter, where we’ll discover how Christ and His Word give us strength to face life’s storms. We’ll explore how the hope of eternal life, trusting God through political uncertainties, navigating family relationships with grace, confronting the reality of suffering for our faith, and standing strong as a church family in challenging times anchor us in Him. This series reminds us that when we’re anchored in Christ, we can endure anything life throws our way with hope and joy.
Takeaway: As citizens of heaven, we are called to live honorably as citizens of earth.

Dear friends, I urge you as strangers and temporary residents to abstain from fleshly desires that war against you. Conduct yourselves honorably among the Gentiles so that in a case where they speak against you as those who do evil, they will, by observing your good works, glorify God on the day of visitation.
– 1 Peter 2:11-12 (HCSB)
But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for His possession.
– 1 Peter 2:9 (HCSB)
But our citizenship is in heaven, from which we also eagerly wait for a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ.
 Philippians 3:20 (HCSB)
“A good life is composed of good deeds, and before the critical eyes of slanderous people, these deeds can glorify God and even win others to belief.”
– Roger Raymer, Bible Knowledge Commentary
Submit to every human authority because of the Lord, whether to the emperor as the supreme authority, or to governors as those sent out by him to punish those who do what is evil and to praise those who do what is good. For it is God’s will that you silence the ignorance of foolish people by doing good.

– 1 Peter 2:15 (HCSB)
He did not commit sin, and no deceit was found in His mouth; when He was reviled, He did not revile in return; when He was suffering, He did not threaten but entrusted Himself to the One who judges justly.
– 1 Peter 2:22-23 (HCSB)
Whatever you do, do it enthusiastically, as something done for the Lord and not for men, knowing that you will receive the reward of an inheritance from the Lord. You serve the Lord Christ. Their honorable, submissive conduct to Roman authorities wasn’t an act of weakness, it was an act of worship to God.
– Colossians 3:23-24 (HCSB)
As God’s slaves, live as free people, but don’t use your freedom as a way to conceal evil.
– 1 Peter 2:16 (HCSB)
Give back to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.
– Matthew 22:21 (HCSB)
We must obey God rather than men.

I urge that petitions, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for everyone, for kings and all those who are in authority, so that we may lead a tranquil and quiet life in all godliness and dignity.
– 1 Timothy 2:1-2 (HCSB)
For a child will be born for us, a son will be given to us, and the government will be on His shoulders. He will be named Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace. The dominion will be vast, and its prosperity will never end. He will reign on the throne of David and over his kingdom, to establish and sustain it with justice and righteousness from now on and forever. The zeal of the Lord of Hosts will accomplish this.
–  Isaiah 9:6-7 (HCSB)

Discussion Questions //

  1. What’s the first election or political event you can remember hearing or learning about? How did it shape your view of politics growing up?
  2. In 1 Peter 2:11-12 Christians are called "strangers and temporary residents" and urges us to abstain from sinful desires. How does living with an eternal perspective affect the way we handle challenges today, such as political uncertainty or being mocked/persecuted for our faith?
  3. Regarding 1 Peter 2:13-15, what are some challenges you've experienced when it comes to respecting those in authority, especially when you disagree with their policies? How does Peter’s command to submit “because of the Lord” change how we view human authorities?
  4. Looking at 1 Peter 2:16, how can we use our freedom in Christ responsibly without falling into sinful behavior? Can you think of modern examples where Christians have either successfully or poorly balanced their freedom with their obligation to honor God and those in authority under God?
  5. Consider Pastor Josh’s three practical application points. Discuss each one and conclude with prayer, asking God to help you live these out in the days ahead.

Being part of God's holy nation requires us to live as honorable citizens.
  • Before the Election: Keep 1 Peter 2:17 close
  • Election Day: Vote according to Biblical values
  • After the Election: Trust God and pray for our leaders
