Anchored - Part 1 [Notes]

In a world full of uncertainties, how can we stay rooted in our faith? Join us for "Anchored," a five-week series through 1 Peter, where we’ll discover how Christ and His Word give us strength to face life’s storms. We’ll explore how the hope of eternal life, trusting God through political uncertainties, navigating family relationships with grace, confronting the reality of suffering for our faith, and standing strong as a church family in challenging times anchor us in Him. This series reminds us that when we’re anchored in Christ, we can endure anything life throws our way with hope and joy.
Takeaway: We have hope, now and forever, because of Jesus.

1 Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ: To the temporary residents dispersed in Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia, chosen according to the foreknowledge of God the Father and set apart by the Spirit for obedience and for sprinkling with the blood of Jesus Christ. May grace and peace be multiplied to you.

Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ: To the temporary residents dispersed in Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia,
 1 Peter 1:1 (HCSB)
Chosen according to the foreknowledge of God the Father and set apart by the Spirit for obedience and for sprinkling with the blood of Jesus Christ. May grace and peace be multiplied to you.
– 1 Peter 1:2 (HCSB)
The Lord is patient, not wanting any to perish but all to come to repentance.
– 1 Peter 3:9 (HCSB)
Praise the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. According to His great mercy, He has given us a new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead and into an inheritance that is imperishable, uncorrupted, and unfading, kept in heaven for you. You are being protected by God’s power through faith for a salvation that is ready to be revealed in the last time.
– 1 Peter 2:3-5 (HCSB)
And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is worthless; you are still in your sins.
– 1 Corinthians 15:17 (HCSB)
elpis: "to look forward with confidence to that which is good and beneficial."
Greek-English Lexicon of the New Testament
We do not want you to be uninformed, brothers and sisters, concerning those who are asleep, so that you will not grieve like the rest, who have no hope.
– 1 Thessalonians 4:13 (HCSB)
We have hope, now and forever, because of Jesus.
You rejoice in this, though now for a short time you have had to struggle in various trials so that the genuineness of your faith—more valuable than gold, which perishes though refined by fire—may result in praise, glory, and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ. You love Him, though you have not seen Him. And though not seeing Him now, you believe in Him and rejoice with inexpressible and glorious joy, because you are receiving the goal of your faith, the salvation of your souls.
– 1 Peter 1:6-9 (HCSB)
In this life, you will have troubles. But take heart; I have overcome the world.
– John 16:33 (HCSB)
We have hope, now and forever, because of Jesus.
Concerning this salvation, the prophets who prophesied about the grace that would come to you searched and carefully investigated. They inquired into what time or what circumstances the Spirit of Christ within them was indicating when He testified in advance to the messianic sufferings and the glories that would follow. It was revealed to them that they were not serving themselves but you. These things have now been announced to you through those who preached the gospel to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven. Angels desire to look into these things.
– 1 Peter 1:10-12 (HCSB)
The reality of the Christian’s living hope was held in awe and wonder by the angelic hosts of heaven. Prophets and angels alike wondered about ‘this salvation’ in the grace that was to come.

Discussion Questions //

  1. In 1 Peter 1:3-5, Peter describes our "living hope" and an "imperishable inheritance." When you think about eternity with God and fellow believers, what are some things you are most looking forward to experiencing?
  2. In verses 1:6-9, Peter talks about rejoicing in the midst of trials because they refine our faith. How have you seen God use difficulties to strengthen your faith and character? How does knowing our future in Christ is secure shape the way you handle challenges today?
  3. In verses 1:10-12, the prophets and angels marveled at the salvation we now experience. How does knowing the depth of God’s plan for salvation—spanning both Old and New Testaments—deepen your appreciation for Jesus' work in your life?
  4. What are some practical ways we can hold on to the living hope we have in Christ, especially during tough times? If you feel comfortable, share any challenges you are currently facing and how the group can offer support and encouragement.
  5. What are some tangible ways we can share our hope, both in word and action, with those in our community and beyond?
