Ten - Part 9 [Notes]

The Ten Commandments are probably the best-known list of "rules" ever recorded, but there is so much more to these commands than meets the eye; they provide a framework for understanding who God is and what it means to be a holy nation. Join us for "Ten," and together, we will discover just how amazing the gift of the Ten Commandments is!
Takeaway: Give instead of steal
Whoever is faithful in very little is also faithful in much, and whoever is unrighteous in very little is also unrighteous in much.
– Luke 16:10 (HCSB)
Do not steal.
– Exodus 20:15, Deuteronomy 5:19 (HCSB)
Steal: to take from another without right or without detection.
– Merriam-Webster
“When a man steals an ox or a sheep and butchers it or sells it, he must repay five cattle for the ox or four sheep for the sheep.”
– Exodus 22:1 (HCSB)
Stealing undermines the trust that is needed for a society to flourish
  • Stealing harms people more than we think
Stealing is an attempt to cheat God’s system of earning a living by working.
The thief must no longer steal. Instead, he must do honest work with his own hands, so that he has something to share with anyone in need.
– Ephesians 4:28 (HCSB)
Food gained by fraud is sweet to a man, but afterward his mouth is full of gravel.
– Proverbs 20:17 (HCSB)
A thief must make full restitution. If he is unable, he is to be sold because of his theft.
 – Exodus 22:3b (HCSB)

Discussion Questions //

  1. What are some of the ways people steal, cheat or scam other people these days? In what ways might things be getting worse when it comes to thievery in our culture today?
  2. Have you ever had someone steal something from you? Besides losing something valuable, what were some of the negative results of the theft?
  3. Read Exodus 20:15; Exodus 22:1-4; and Proverbs 6:30-31. Why do you think God hates stealing? Why do you think the consequences for stealing are so significant in these verses? How do you think we should deal with thieves in our culture today?
  4. Read Proverbs 20:17. What do you think this verse means? Are you willing to admit you have ever stolen anything? Were there any consequences for your actions?
  5. Read Ephesians 4:28. What do we learn from this verse about how Christ wants to change our lives? Can you think of other examples
where God wants to change us (e.g. from being liars to truthtellers.)
  6. What do you think we ought to do if we have stolen from someone?
