The Ten Commandments are probably the best-known list of "rules" ever recorded, but there is so much more to these commands than meets the eye; they provide a framework for understanding who God is and what it means to be a holy nation. Join us for "Ten," and together, we will discover just how amazing the gift of the Ten Commandments is!

Takeaway: If God has His proper place, everything else will fall into place.

“I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the place of slavery.”

We will love God above everything else.

Then God spoke all these words: I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the place of slavery. Do not have other gods besides Me.

2. We will “fear” God and obey Him.

If only they had such a heart to fear Me and keep all My commands always, so that they and their children will prosper forever.

All the people witnessed the thunder and lightning, the sound of the trumpet, and the mountain surrounded by smoke. When the people saw it they trembled and stood at a distance. “You speak to us, and we will listen,” they said to Moses, “but don’t let God speak to us, or we will die.” Moses responded to the people, “Don’t be afraid, for God has come to test you, so that you will fear Him and will not sin.”

Therefore, whether we are at home or away, we make it our aim to be pleasing to Him. For we must all appear before the tribunal of Christ, so that each may be repaid for what he has done in the body, whether good or worthless.

3. We will serve (worship) God with our time, talents, and resources.

For we are His creation, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared ahead of time so that we should walk in them.

Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us hold on to grace. By it, we may serve God acceptably, with reverence and awe, for our God is a consuming fire.

The verb “to serve” is used repeatedly in this epistle with reference to the service and the worship which are due to God from all of us.

Discussion Questions //

Do you think that most people in general think much about God throughout the day? How about most Christians? Are they mindful of God as they go about their lives? Explain your answers.
Read Exodus 20:1-3 and Deuteronomy 6:4-5. How do you think it would impact our lives if we were always aware of the fact there is a God and he is always watching over us?
Read Deuteronomy 5:29, Proverbs 9:10 and 2 Corinthians 5:11a. What do you think it means to fear God? How is fearing God different from being afraid of Him? If we have a proper fear of God, how might it impact what we do and the decisions we make?
Read Deuteronomy 6:4-5. Why do you think God commands us to love him?
What might loving God look like? In other words, how would a proper love for God impact our lives?
How might you apply today’s lesson to your life?
