Fear Less - Part 4
“Can any of you add one moment to his life span by worrying?”
– Matthew 6:27
On more occasions than I would like, I allow things to slip through the cracks. I forget one thing or another. I have forgotten one of my son’s doctor’s appointments and even students’ names multiple weeks in a row. I never intend to forget a student’s name or something someone’s told me; it just happens.

I believe I can be forgetful because my mind is so often overwhelmed with worry. My thoughts are frequently held captive by all the things that could go wrong, the worst-case scenarios, or what other people may think of me. With all that space being taken up by worry, how can I have room for anything else?

How do I have time to remember x, y, and z when all these worries and anxieties need to be tended to? Well, the answer is I don’t have the time, and when my mind is consumed with worry, it is almost always because I have forgotten to tend to the thing that needs the most attention— my relationship with God.

When we look to the past, let us look at what God has done through and despite all the mistakes, all the pain, and all the hurt.

When I remember who Christ is, that is when I become aware once again that I am loved by a holy God and saved by His grace. It is then my thinking and my life change. I begin to step into God’s will for my life, into a life absent of worry.

On Sunday, Pastor Tim shared a tangible step for us to take into a life that lacks worry: “We will worry less about the future if we remember how God has taken care of us in the past.”

Looking to the past can often feel like a tricky thing from our human perspective. Our past often consists of hurt and bad memories. I am not encouraging you to sit and dwell on the pain of your past or your past mistakes. When we look to the past, let us look at what God has done through and despite all the mistakes, all the pain, and all the hurt. The Apostle Paul says this in Philippians 3:13-14: “Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and reaching forward to what is ahead, I pursue as my goal the prize promised by God’s heavenly call in Christ Jesus.”

Let us look at how faithful God was to us then, and let that indicate to us how faithful He will be to us in the future.

This week, let’s take time to remember who God is and what He has done for us, whether that be by memorizing a verse, like Romans 8:28, or by starting a journal recording how God has been faithful to you, so when difficult things come, we will worry less.
“We know that all things work together for the good of those who love God, who are called according to his purpose.”
– Romans 8:28
