Fear Less - Part 3 [Notes]

The phrase, “Don’t be afraid!” appears in the Bible more than any other Biblical command—and for good reason! People of all generations have struggled to trust God when facing difficult or scary situations.

If God is with us, and He is for us, we don’t need to be afraid.

On that day, when evening had come, He told them, “Let’s cross over to the other side of the sea. ”So they left the crowd and took Him along since He was already in the boat. And other boats were with Him.

The boat [was] 26½ feet long, 7½ feet wide, and 4½ feet high...both fore and aft sections of the boat appear to have been covered with a deck, providing space on which to sit or lie. The boat was propelled by four rowers (two per side) and has a total capacity of about fifteen persons.

A fierce windstorm arose, and the waves were breaking over the boat, so that the boat was already being swamped.But He was in the stern, sleeping on the cushion. So they woke Him up and said to Him, “Teacher! Don’t You care that we’re going to die?”

He got up, rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, “Silence! Be still! ”The wind ceased, and there was a great calm. Then He said to them, “Why are you fearful? Do you still have no faith?” And they were terrified and asked one another, “Who then is this? Even the wind and the sea obey Him!”

Discussion Questions //

Why do you think God created us with the ability to experience fear? How can fear be a good thing?
Read Mark 4:35-41. Why do you think the disciples were so upset with Jesus? Have you ever gotten upset with God because it didn’t seem like He cared about what you were going through? How did you deal with the situation?
Read Mark 4:41 again. How might the disciples have responded differently to this situation if they had been aware of who Jesus really was?
Why do you think Jesus was able to sleep in the midst of the storm?
Read Romans 8:31-39. How do we know God is with us and for us? How might this knowledge help us face our fears?
