Ten - Part 4 [Notes]

The Ten Commandments are probably the best-known list of "rules" ever recorded, but there is so much more to these commands than meets the eye; they provide a framework for understanding who God is and what it means to be a holy nation. Join us for "Ten," and together, we will discover just how amazing the gift of the Ten Commandments is!
Takeaway: Keep God’s name holy.
Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be Thy name.
– Matthew 6:9b (KJV)
Do not misuse the name of the Lord your God, because the Lord will not leave anyone unpunished who misuses His name.
– Exodus 20:7 (HCSB)
Keep God’s name holy.
Then God spoke all these words: I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the place of slavery. Do not have other gods besides Me. Do not make an idol for yourself, (whether in the shape of anything in the heavens above or on the earth below or in the waters under the earth. You must not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the fathers’ sin, to the third and fourth generations  of those who hate Me, but showing faithful love to a thousand generations of those who love Me and keep My commands. Do not misuse the name of the Lord your God, because the Lord will not leave anyone unpunished who misuses His name.
– Exodus 20:1-7 (HCSB)
Whereas the second commandment prohibits visual representations of God, the third focuses on verbal representations. As a sign of their respect for God, the people were to exercise the greatest caution when talking about him or invoking his name. They were to say nothing which might detract from a true appreciation of His nature and character.
– T.D. Alexander
Do not misuse the name of the Lord your God, because the Lord will not leave anyone unpunished who misuses His name.
– Exodus 20:7 (HCSB)
You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes His name in vain.
– Exodus 20:7 (ESV)
Then Moses asked God, “If I go to the Israelites and say to them: The God of your fathers has sent me to you, and they ask me, ‘What is His name?’ what should I tell them?” God replied to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: I AM has sent me to you.” God also said to Moses, “Say this to the Israelites: Yahweh, the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, has sent me to you. This is My name forever; this is how I am to be remembered in every generation.
– Exodus 3:13-15 (HCSB)
This name Yahweh reveals God’s nature in the highest and fullest sense possible. It includes, or presupposes, the meaning of the other names. Yahweh particularly stresses the absolute faithfulness of God. Moses is told by God that Israel is about to behold and experience the unchangeableness of God as he steadfastly and wondrously remembers his word and executes it to the fullest degree. God would prove to be a faithful, redeeming, upholding, restoring God. In working out this redemption, God would demonstrate that he is all that his name implies: merciful, gracious, patient, full of loving-kindness, truthful, faithful, forgiving, just, and righteous.
– Walter Elwell
Keep God’s name holy:
  1. Keep God’s name holy with your words.
No foul language is to come from your mouth, but only what is good for building up someone in need,  so that it gives grace to those who hear.
– Ephesians 4:29 (HCSB)
Keep God’s name holy:
  1. Keep God’s name holy with your words.
  2. Keep God’s name holy with your actions.
Whatever you do, in word or in deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.
– Colossians 3:17 (HCSB)
I really can’t express to you what it felt like to wear the West Virginia University uniform. Every time I wore that uniform I felt something really special, and it was something that I will never forget. When I competed and wore that number, I competed for the state and for the people, not just for the university.
– Jerry West (November 26, 2005)
Keep God’s name holy:
  1. Keep God’s name holy with your words.
  2. Keep God’s name holy with your actions.
  3. Keep God’s name holy in your heart.
These people honor Me with their lips, but their heart is far from Me. They worship Me in vain, teaching as doctrines the commands of men.”
– Matthew 15:8-9 (HCSB)
Bless the Lord, O my soul, and all that is within me, bless His holy name!
– Psalm 103:1 (ESV)
