Ten - Part 5 [Notes]

The Ten Commandments are probably the best-known list of "rules" ever recorded, but there is so much more to these commands than meets the eye; they provide a framework for understanding who God is and what it means to be a holy nation. Join us for "Ten," and together, we will discover just how amazing the gift of the Ten Commandments is!
Takeaway: Honor the Sabbath.
One person considers one day to be above another day. Someone else considers every day to be the same. Each one must be fully convinced in his own mind.
– Romans 14:5 (HCSB)
Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy: You are to labor six days and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God. You must not do any work—you, your son or daughter, your male or female slave, your livestock, or the foreigner who is within your gates. For the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and everything in them in six days; then He rested on the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and declared it holy.
– Exodus 20:8-11 (HCSB)
Three compelling reasons for observing a Sabbath day:
  • To follow the example of our Creator.
For the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and everything in them in six days; then He rested on the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and declared it holy.
– Exodus 20:11 (HCSB)
By the seventh day God completed His work that He had done, and He rested on the seventh day from all His work that He had done. God blessed the seventh day and declared it holy, for on it He rested from His work of creation.
– Genesis 2:2-3(HCSB)
…for in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, but on the seventh day He rested and was refreshed.”
– Exodus 31:17b (HCSB)
Three compelling reasons for observing a Sabbath day:
  • To follow the example of our Creator.
A second compelling reason for observing a Sabbath day:
  • To remember there is more to life than work.
Remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt, and the Lord your God brought you out of there with a strong hand and an outstretched arm. That is why the Lord your God has commanded you to keep the Sabbath day.
– Deuteronomy 5:15 (HCSB)
  • To remember there is more to life than work.
  • To follow the example of our Creator.
  • To remember there is more to life than work.
  • To exercise trust in God who provides.
“You are to keep My statutes and ordinances and carefully observe them, so that you may live securely in the land. Then the land will yield its fruit, so that you can eat, be satisfied, and live securely in the land. If you wonder: ‘What will we eat in the seventh year if we don’t sow or gather our produce?’ I will appoint My blessing for you in the sixth year, so that it will produce a crop sufficient for three years. When you sow in the eighth year, you will be eating from the previous harvest. You will be eating this until the ninth year when its harvest comes in.
– Leviticus 25:18-22 (HCSB)
Understand that the Lord has given you the Sabbath; therefore on the sixth day He will give you two days’ worth of bread. Each of you stay where you are; no one is to leave his place on the seventh day.
– Exodus 16:29 (HCSB)
Compelling reasons for observing a Sabbath day:
  • To follow the example of our Creator.
  • To remember there is more to life than work.
  • To exercise trust in God who provides.
  • Stop
  • Rest
  • Delight
  • Contemplate
