He Will Be Called - Part 2 [Notes]

This time of year, so much of the world focuses on Jesus. But who was and is Jesus, and what difference can He make in our lives? In the Christmas series titled, “He Will Be Called,” we will be focusing on some of the titles, names or descriptions given to Jesus in the Old and New Testaments. Jesus is more amazing than we realize, and He can make the difference in our lives.
Today's Takeaway // Jesus, our Redeemer, came to pay our debt and set us free.
For you know that you were redeemed from your empty way of life inherited from the fathers, not with perishable things like silver or gold, but with the precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without defect or blemish.
– 1 Peter 1:18-19 (HCSB)
The deliverance from bondage by a payment or ransom.
– CSB
"For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life—a ransom for many."
– Mark 10:45 (HCSB)
To redeem means “to set free by paying a price.”
– Wiersbe
The English word “redemption” is derived from a Latin root, meaning “to buy back.” Thus, it means “the liberation of any possession, object, or person, usually by payment of a ransom.” In Greek, the root word means “to loose” and so “to free.” It is used to mean freeing from chains, slavery, or prison.
– E.E. Carpenter
“...should a piece of property be lost to a family member, the next-of-kin had both the right and the obligation to redeem this property. This right of redemption protected the family inheritance.
– W. A. Elwell
Jesus, our Redeemer, came to pay our debt and set us free.
  • Christ redeemed us from the penalty and power of sin.
He has rescued us from the domain of darkness and transferred us into the kingdom of the Son He loves. We have redemption, the forgiveness of sins, in Him.
– Colossians 1:13-14 (HCSB)
For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
– Romans 6:23 (HCSB)
We have redemption in Him through His blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of His grace that He lavished on us...
– Ephesians 1:7-8a (HCSB)
  • Christ redeemed us from the penalty and power of sin.
  • Christ redeems us from the futility of this life.
For you know that you were redeemed from your empty way of life inherited from the fathers, not with perishable things like silver or gold, but with the precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without defect or blemish.
– 1 Peter 1:18-19 (HCSB)
The life of unbelievers before their conversion is futile, empty, and devoted to false gods. Such a way of life has been handed down from the forefathers, from generation to generation.
– Schreiner
For the grace of God has appeared with salvation for all people, instructing us to deny godlessness and worldly lust and to live in a sensible, righteous, and godly way in the present age, while we wait for the blessed hope and appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ. He gave Himself for use to redeem us from all lawlessness and to cleanse for Himself a people for His own possession, eager to do good works.
– Titus 2:11-14 (HCSB)
  • Christ redeemed us from the penalty and power of sin.
  • Christ redeems us from the futility of this life.
  • Christ will redeem us from the curse placed upon all of creation.
For the creation eagerly waits with anticipation for God’s sons to be revealed. For the creation was subjected to futility—not willingly, but because of Him who subjected it—in the hope that the creation itself will also be set free from the bondage of corruption into the glorious freedom of God’s children. For we know that the whole creation has been groaning together with labor pains until now. And not only that, but we ourselves who have the Spirit as the first fruits—we also groan within ourselves, eagerly waiting for adoption, the redemption of our bodies.
– Romans 8:19-23 (HCSB)
Brothers, I tell you this: Flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdomof God, and corruption cannot inherit incorruption. Listen! I am telling you a mystery: We will not all fall asleep, but we will all be changed, in a moment, in the blink of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised incorruptible, and we will be changed. For this corruptible must be clothed with incorruptibility, and this mortal must be clothed with immortality.
– 1 Corinthians 15:50-53 (HCSB)
  • Christ redeemed us from the penalty and power of sin.
  • Christ redeems us from the futility of this life.
  • Christ will redeem us from the curse placed upon all of creation.

Discussion Questions //

  1. Have you ever had someone pay a debt you owed? How did that make you feel? How did it impact how you felt about the person who paid your debt?
  2. Read 1 Peter 1:18-19, Romans 8:22-23, and Titus 2:11-14. According to my study Bible, redemption can be defined as,“deliverance from bondage by a payment or ransom.” What are some ways people can be enslaved? How can Christ set us free from these things?
  3. Read Romans 6:6-8 and Titus 2:11-14 (again). How should being redeemed impact how we live our lives?
  4. Read Philippians1:18-21 and 1 John 2:15. What difference would it make in our lives if we recognized our citizenship is in heaven and not on this earth?
  5. How might you apply today’s lesson to your life?
