He Will Be Called - Part 1 [Notes]

This time of year, so much of the world focuses on Jesus. But who was and is Jesus, and what difference can He make in our lives? In the Christmas series titled, “He Will Be Called,” we will be focusing on some of the titles, names or descriptions given to Jesus in the Old and New Testaments. Jesus is more amazing than we realize, and He can make the difference in our lives.
Today's Takeaway // Jesus is the Logos, the Word of God.
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
– John 1:1 (HCSB)
In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.
– Genesis 1:1 (HCSB)
In the beginning was the Word...
– John 1:1a (HCSB)
The Greek word logos (“word”) ordinarily refers to an explanation or reason for something otherwise meaningless.
– S.W. Lemke
Logos has a variety of uses depending on context. With regard to language or grammar, logos can mean “sentence” or “statement,” while regarding logic or knowledge it can mean “reason,” “explanation,” “science,” or “formula.”
The preaching of the gospel brings order and meaning to lives shattered by sin. Those who put faith in Jesus, the Logos, will be welcomed into the family of God.
– S.W. Lemke
Jesus is the Logos, the Word of God.
The Word created all things.
creatio ex nihilo
Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away, and look, new things have come.
– 2 Corinthians 5:17 (HCSB)
For I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is God’s power for salvation to everyone who believes.
– Romans 1:16a (HCSB)
...you have been born again—not of perishable seed but of imperishable—through the living and enduring Word of God. For all flesh is like grass, and all its glory like a flower of the grass. The grass withers, and the flower falls, but the Word of the Lord endures forever. And this is the Word that was preached as the gospel to you.
– 1 Peter 1:23b-25 (HCSB)
The Word is God’s clearest communication with humanity.
The Word (Logos) is a title for Jesus as the communication and the revealer of God the Father.
The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky proclaims the work of His hands.
– Psalm 19:1 (HCSB)
  • The Word created all things.
  • The Word is God’s clearest communication with humanity.
The Word came to connect us with our Creator.
The Word became flesh and took up residence among us. We observed His glory, the glory as the One and Only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.
– John 1:14 (HCSB)
  • The Word created all things.
  • The Word is God’s clearest communication with humanity.
  • The Word came to connect us with our Creator.
He was in the world, and the world was created through Him, yet the world did not recognize Him. He came to His own, and His own people did not receive Him. But to all who did receive Him, He gave them the right to be children of God, to those who believe in His name, who were born, not of blood, or of the will of the flesh, or of the will of man, but of God.
– John1:10-13 (HCSB)

Discussion Questions //

  1. Who do you think most people think Jesus is?
  2. Read John 1:1-14. What are some of the things we learn about Jesus from these verses? Why is it important we view Him correctly?
  3. Why do you think Jesus is called “the Word” in verses 1 and 14? How do these verses connect with Genesis 1:1?
  4. Read John 1:11-12 again. Why do you think the people of Jesus’s day did not receive him? What about people these days?
  5. Why is it important that people place their trust in Christ? How might God want to use us this holiday season to point people to Christ?
