Fear Less - Part 5 [Notes]

The phrase, “Don’t be afraid!” appears in the Bible more than any other Biblical command—and for good reason! People of all generations have struggled to trust God when facing difficult or scary situations.

Join us for “Fear Less” and learn from the Biblical stories that can help us face our fears with faith.
Today's Takeaway // We don't have to face our fears alone.

Your life should be free from the love of money. Be satisfied with what you have, for He Himself has said, I will never leave you or forsake you. Therefore, we may boldly say: The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid. What can man do to me?
– Hebrews 13:5-6 (HCSB)
No one will be able to stand against you as long as you live. I will be with you, just as I was with Moses. I will not leave you or forsake you. “Be strong and courageous, for you will distribute the land I swore to their fathers to give them as an inheritance. Above all, be strong and very courageous to carefully observe the whole instruction My servant Moses commanded you.

– Joshua 1:9 (HCSB)
They answered Joshua, “Everything you have commanded us we will do, and everywhere you send us we will go. We will obey you, just as we obeyed Moses in everything. And may the Lord your God be with you, as He was with Moses. Anyone who rebels against your order and does not obey your words in all that you command him, will be put to death. Above all, be strong and courageous!”

We don’t have to face our fears alone.
Above all, be strong and courageous!” – Joshua 1:18b
Now Jericho was strongly fortified because of the Israelites—no one leaving or entering. The Lord said to Joshua, “Look, I have handed Jericho, its king, and its fighting men over to you. March around the city with all the men of war, circling the city one time. Do this for six days. Have seven priests carry seven ram’s-horn trumpets in front of the ark. But on the seventh day, march around the city seven times, while the priests blow the trumpets. When there is a prolonged blast of the horn and you hear its sound, have all the people give a mighty shout. Then the city wall will collapse, and the people will advance, each man straight ahead.”
– Joshua 6:1-5 (HCSB)

– Joshua 8:1 (HCSB)

– Joshua 10:25 (HCSB)
And let us be concerned about one another in order to promote love and good works, not staying away from our worship meetings, as some habitually do, but encouraging each other, and all the more as you see the day drawing near.
– Hebrews 10:24-25 (HCSB)

Discussion Questions //

  1. Can you think of any examples in your life where someone has helped you face your fears? What happened, and why was it helpful?
  2. Why do you think we often choose to face our fears alone?
  3. Read Deuteronomy 31:1-8, 23 and Joshua 1:6-9. Why do you think it was necessary for the people to be told, “Be strong and courageous” so often?
  4. Why do we struggle to believe God is really with us and for us? What are some things that might help us grow in our faith that God is on our side?
  5. Read Hebrews 10:24-25. What role can others play in our lives when it comes to dealing with our fears? What are some ways we can encourage (“instill courage”) in one another?
  6. Are there other steps you take to deal with fear in your life? How might you apply today’s lesson to your life?
