Fear Less - Part 1
2023 has been a pretty stressful year for my family. Not only were we building a home, but in February, we found out that my husband's lymphoma had returned, and he was going to undergo some heavy-dose chemotherapy plus a stem cell transplant that would temporarily wipe out his entire immune system. Plus, as soon as our house was complete, we would have to sell our old house and move all of our stuff. The stress of all of this was overwhelming at times.

How can we become more fearless and trust that God will take care of us? I believe that the answer to this is to spend time in prayer and reading His Word. I spent countless hours in prayer, asking for God’s help and His strength to not live in constant fear and worry.

Jesus knew that His only hope to overcome fear was to pray and ask God for help. I believe that we are supposed to follow that same example.

On Sunday, Pastor Tim talked about how Jesus, before His death on the cross, had some fear about what was going to happen to Him. Since Jesus was fully God and fully man, He experienced human emotions. How did Jesus combat this fear? He turned to God in prayer.
“Then He said to Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, ‘My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with me.’ Going a little farther, He fell with His face to the ground and prayed, ‘My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from Me. Yet not as I will, but as You will.’”
– Matthew 26:38-39
Jesus knew that His only hope to overcome fear was to pray and ask God for help. I believe that we are supposed to follow that same example.

I have really leaned on God this year to overcome my fear about the future and how everything will work out. I saw firsthand how He answered many of my prayers this year. We didn’t know if we would get to go on our yearly vacation, but my husband was doing so well in August that his doctor gave him the okay to go. Our new house was completed this summer, and thanks to the help of wonderful friends from the church, we were able to move the majority of our stuff in one day. We also closed on our previous house two weeks after we moved into our new home, so the burden of caring for two homes simultaneously was lifted! The most important thing of all, about a month after we moved to our new house, my husband got the results of his PET scan and, for the first time in many years, had a completely clear scan! These are all things I am praising God for!

Even though this year has been difficult, I have grown a lot in my faith as I continue to see God’s faithfulness. I memorized this verse and repeated it to myself during difficult times: Proverbs 3:5-6 says, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight.”

What fears do you have that you need to give to God? Take time today to pray and ask Him to help you overcome your fears and to have more peace in your life.
