Our new series, “Ten,” began on Sunday, and Pastor Tim made the point that the Ten Commandments (or Ten Words) are not the way of salvation but reveal the path that leads to an abundant, rich, and satisfying life. This message made me think of how it’s easy to make small compromises that can escalate into larger ones. Something that “won’t hurt just this once” can become something we continue to allow, leading us to a place we never intended to be.
For example, lately, my husband has been having health issues related to his gallbladder. We’ve been really busy, especially in the evenings, with the kids’ activities and other commitments, making it challenging to eat balanced, healthy meals. Most of the time, it’s easier and more convenient to grab fast food or get dinner from a concession stand. Somehow, not many of those foods made it to the food pyramid. (Is that even still a thing?) We know eating healthy is better and understand that it is good for us, but we were reminded of the consequences of slipping and choosing what was “easier” or “more fun” when my husband was diagnosed with gallstones.

God's way of living life is the best way to live. It's the only way that leads to true and lasting joy and understanding.
Unhealthy eating may seem appealing at the time, but if we partake in it too regularly, it can cause us pain and suffering. Sinful behaviors, similarly, may appear appealing at the time, but when we disobey God's commands, they also lead to pain and suffering. God's way of living life is the best way to live. It's the only way that leads to true and lasting joy and understanding.
I haven’t turned away from Your regulations, for You have taught me well. How sweet Your words taste to me; they are sweeter than honey. Your commandments give me understanding; no wonder I hate every false way of life.

At times, it may seem like following God’s Word is archaic, irrelevant, or keeping us from what’s fun in life, but when it comes down to it, we should trust the God who created us and knows the number of hairs on our heads to understand what is best for us.
We know that all things work together for the good of those who love God: those who are called according to His purpose.
