Good for Evil

Do not repay anyone evil for evil. Try to do what is honorable in everyone’s eyes. If possible, on your part, live at peace with everyone.
– Romans 12:17-18
Man, that is hard for me to do. When someone shows evil towards me or someone I love, I want to fight back or shun them. If they are acting this way toward me then why do I need them in my life? The last thing I want to do is the honorable thing or live at peace with them. I have been guilty of that, recently, with someone. I fought back. I didn’t show much love. That’s not what God wants from us or for us.

On Sunday, Pastor Josh Rhodes wrapped up our Who Am I series by sharing how, in Christ, we are a family that serves and loves each other, even when it’s hard.

God is asking us to show love, no matter what, because that love covers all of the junk that we are dealing with.

Yeah, even within the family of Christ, it can be hard to serve and love each other. Especially in this world we live in. It seems like our culture has slowly diminished the value and importance of the word, “love”. We love someone until it’s not convenient for us or until that someone hurts us. We “love” when we feel like it instead of actively making it a part of our lives in how we treat people. “Love” isn’t taken as seriously as it should be.
Above all, maintain an intense love for each other, since love covers a multitude of sins.
- 1 Peter 4:8
God is asking us to show love, no matter what, because that love covers all of the junk that we are dealing with. When you start viewing others in that way, your feelings toward them change. You start seeing them differently. They begin to see you differently. And that relationship that you thought was dead will start to grow again.

Because of my selfishness and stubbornness, there is a dead relationship in my life but it’s not too late for me to build it back up again. It’s not too late to show love toward that person and to be at peace with them. It’s not an easy thing for me, but I know that God can change my heart toward them and it can become easier for me to love them over time.

You may have a dead relationship in your life. It’s not too late for you. Send them a card. Shoot them a text. Pray for them. You would be surprised how much that simple act will do in repairing something that may have been broken or maintaining a relationship that has been difficult.

I encourage us all to remember 1 Peter 4:8. Let’s be intentional in showing intense love for each other, even when it’s hard because it’s what God has asked of us but also…. We need each other.
