Advent: Introduction

The celebration of Advent is possible only to those who are troubled in soul, who know themselves to be poor and imperfect, and who look forward to something greater to come.
 –Dietrich Bonhoeffer
The word Advent, used to describe the season leading up to Christmas, stems from the Latin word adventus, meaning coming. For Christians, Advent is a time where we remember Christ’s first coming and grow our expectation of His second.

Christians have been celebrating Advent for around 1,500 years and have done so in many ways. Some use a wreath and four candles as a symbol to track the season. Each candle represents a theme for us to focus on. Though these can vary, we have chosen to focus on hope, faith, joy and peace.

Each week, you will find an introduction to the theme, five devotionals written by members of our staff, and a space for reflection, to respond with your own thoughts.

We encourage you to read the introduction on Sunday of each week, and join us for our Sunday service, as Pastor Tim's message will correlate with the theme of this devotional. Then, read through one devotional each day. On Saturday of each week, spend some time in prayer, and reflect on what God has been teaching you.

Our hope is that this devotional will help you slow down in the midst of an ever-busy season and to fall more deeply in love with the person of Jesus.
Special thanks to our contributors:
