Face to Face - Part 1 [Notes]

Lives were changed after an encounter with Jesus... lives of people just like you and me.
Today's Takeaway // Jesus is the Lamb of God and the Lord of All
In those days Mary set out and hurried to a town in the hill country of Judah where she entered Zechariah’s house and greeted Elizabeth. When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the baby leaped inside her, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit. Then she exclaimed with a loud cry: "You are the most blessed of women, and your child will be blessed! How could this happen to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?"1

For everyone who practices wicked things hates the light and avoids it, so that his deeds may not be exposed.2
- John 3:20 (HCSB)

I baptize you with water for repentance, but the One who is coming after me is more powerful than I. I am not worthy to remove His sandals. He Himself will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.
- Matthew 3:11 (HCSB)
The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, "Here is the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world! This is the One I told you about: 'After me comes a man who has surpassed me, because He existed before me'."
- John 1:29-30 (HCSB)
Jesus is the Lamb of God and the Lord of All
This is the One I told you about: "After me comes a man who has surpassed me, because He existed before me."
- John 1:30 (HCSB)
I didn't know Him, but I came baptizing with water so He might be revealed to Israel. And John testified, "I watched the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and He rested on Him. I didn’t know Him, but He who sent me to baptize with water told me,'The One you see the Spirit descending and resting on—He is the One who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.' I have seen and testified that He is the Son of God!"
- John 1:31-34 (HCSB)
All things were created through Him, and apart from Him not one thing was created that has been created.
- John 1:3 (HCSB)
If you confess with your mouth, "Jesus is Lord," and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.
- Romans 10:9 (HCSB)
The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, "Here is the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world."
 - John 1:29 (HCSB)
The Passover lamb (Exodus 12) and Isaiah’s mention of the Messiah’s likeness to a lamb (Isa. 53:7) may have been in John’s mind. John, by the Holy Spirit, saw Jesus as the sacrificial Victim who was to die for the sin of the world.

Jesus is the Lamb of God and the Lord of All
Again the next day, John was standing with two of his disciples. When he saw Jesus passing by, he said, "Look! The Lamb of God!" The two disciples heard him say this and followed Jesus. When Jesus turned and noticed them following Him, He asked them,"What are you looking for?" They said to Him, "Rabbi (which means 'Teacher'), where are You staying?" "Come and you’ll see," He replied. So they went and saw where He was staying, and they stayed with Him that day. It was about 10 in the morning.
- John 1:35-39 (HCSB)
• The Hebrew word means my great one; it is used for a recognized teacher of the Scriptures.
... If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word. My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our home with Him. 4

Discussion Questions //

  1. Who do you think most people in our country think Jesus was (and is)?
  2. Read John 1:1-12, 29-31. What are some of the things we learn about Jesus’s identity from these verses? Why is it essential we recognize who Jesus was?
  3. Why do you think people struggle to believe Jesus was really God in the flesh? How might you demonstrate to someone the deity of Christ?
  4. How would you explain the significance of John the Baptist’s statement, “Behold the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world?”
  5.  John the Baptist viewed Jesus as being both the“Lamb of God” and “Lord of All.” How might these two titles impact your life? How might our acknowledgement that Jesus is Lord affect what we do in life?
