Third Person - Part 1 [Notes]

You’re invited to join us for "Third Person," a three-week series exploring who the Holy Spirit is as the third member of the Trinity, what He does, and how He helps us as believers. While many Christians talk often about God the Father and Jesus the Son, the Holy Spirit is sometimes overlooked or misunderstood. In this series, we’ll aim to clear up confusion, trace the Spirit’s work throughout Scripture, and discover how He empowers us to live with peace and power today. If you’ve ever felt unsure about who the Holy Spirit is, how He works, or how we should relate to Him, this series is for you. Though we’ll cover some deep doctrine, there will be plenty of practical and helpful applications along the way.
Takeaway: A proper Biblical understanding of who the Holy Spirit is, and what He does, is essential in the life of a Christian.

Problem: Misunderstanding, over-emphasizing, and under-emphasizing the person and work of the Holy Spirit can all be problematic.
Takeaway: A proper, Biblical understanding of who the Holy Spirit is, and what He does, is essential in the life of a Christian.

  1. The Holy Spirit is the third Person of the one, eternal, almighty and perfect Triune God.
In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness covered the surface of the watery depths, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the surface of the waters. So God created man in His own image; He created him in the image of God; He created them male and female.
– Genesis 1:1-2 (HCSB)
The image of the Spirit of God (in Genesis 1:2) hovering over the surface of the waters brings to mind a mother bird caring for and protecting her young. God’s Spirit was actively involved in the creation of the world. God’s care and protection of us are still active in the Holy Spirit today.
Life Application Study Bible
Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness. They will rule the fish of the sea, the birds of the sky, the livestock, all the earth, and the creatures that crawl on the earth.”
– Genesis 1:26–27 (HCSB)
This verse (Genesis 1:26) must imply that there is more than one Person in God.
– Wayne Grudem
For everything was created by Him, in heaven and on earth, the visible and the invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities, all things have been created through Him and for Him.
– Colossians 1:16 (HCSB)
We believe there is an almighty, perfect God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, eternally coexistent personalities of the same essence.
Chestnut Ridge Church beliefs
We believe in the personality of the Holy Spirit and His ministry of convicting and regenerating sinful people and indwelling, filling, sealing and empowering believers.
Chestnut Ridge Church beliefs
For My thoughts are not your thoughts, and your ways are not My ways. This is the Lord’s declaration. For as heaven is higher than earth, so My ways are higher than your ways,
and My thoughts than your thoughts.
– Isaiah 55:8-9 (HCSB)

The word Pneumatology comes from two Greek words: pneuma, meaning ‘wind, air, spirit,’ and logos, meaning ‘word’ or ‘study.’ So, Pneumatology is the study of God the Holy Spirit, the third Person of the Trinity.

Pharaoh, the king of Egypt, said about him, Can we find anyone like this, a man who has God’s Spirit in him?
– Genesis 41:38 (HCSB)
Moses went out and told the people the words of the Lord. He brought 70 men from the elders of the people and had them stand around the tent. Then the Lord descended in the cloud and spoke to him. He took some of the Spirit that was on Moses and placed the Spirit on the elders. As the Spirit rested on them, they prophesied, but they never did it again.

Discussion Questions //

  1. Did you grow up hearing the phrase “Holy Ghost”? (which is the King James Bible translation of the Holy Spirit). Why do you think the idea of the Holy Spirit can feel confusing or even intimidating to some people?
  2. Pastor Josh shared that YouTube and social media clips of people making bold claims in the name of the Holy Spirit adds to the confusion and even spreads false teaching. Have you ever seen anything like that? How did it make you feel?
  3. Today’s takeaway was: “A proper Biblical understanding of who the Holy Spirit is, and what He does, is essential in the life of a Christian.” How do you think this kind of doctrinal series could help strengthen your faith and grow your love for God and others?
  4. Read all of Genesis 1:1 to 2:3 (the creation story). Review and discuss how the beginning of the Bible teaches the doctrine of the Trinity. (If there’s time, also read John 1:1–5 and Colossians 1:15–20 to see how Jesus is revealed in creation.)
  5. Read Genesis 41:37-40 and Micah 3:8. How did the Holy Spirit empower leaders and prophets in the Old Testament? What stands out to you in these examples, or others Pastor Josh shared on Sunday?
  6. This week’s application wasn’t necessarily about doing something practical like in our last series about modern problems – it was about believing truth. How can trusting what God says about Himself (even when it’s hard to understand) grow your faith? Close by praying together, acknowledging that God is God and we are not. Thank Him for revealing Himself to us through His Word and His Spirit.
