The world feels heavy for a lot of people right now. Stress, anxiety, relationships, busyness, and constant pressure can leave us overwhelmed. Living Light is a timely three-week series about how faith in Christ, sharing life with others, and wise limits can truly help lighten the load. This isn’t a “try harder” or “do better” series; it’s an opportunity to slow down, reflect on God’s Word, and take steps toward living in a more sustainable, enjoyable way.
Cast your burden on the Lord, and He will sustain you; He will never allow the righteous to be shaken.
— Psalm 55:22
— Psalm 55:22
[Cast] all your care on Him, because He cares about you.
– 1 Peter 5:7
– 1 Peter 5:7
Jesus came to carry our load, starting with the burden of our sin
“Come to Me, all of you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. All of you, take up My yoke and learn from Me, because I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for yourselves. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.”
– Matthew 11:28-30 [Emphasis added]
– Matthew 11:28-30 [Emphasis added]
When Jesus had finished giving orders to His 12 disciples, He moved on from there to teach and preach in their towns.
— Matthew 11:1
— Matthew 11:1
Then the eyes of the blind will be opened, and the ears of the deaf unstopped. Then the lame will leap like a deer, and the tongue of the mute will sing for joy…
— Isaiah 35:5-6a
— Isaiah 35:5-6a
This is the one it is written about: Look, I am sending My messenger ahead of You; he will prepare Your way before You.
– Matthew 11:10 [Emphasis added]
– Matthew 11:10 [Emphasis added]
“John answered them all, “I baptize you with water, but One is coming who is more powerful than I. I am not worthy to untie the strap of His sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.
— Luke 3:16
— Luke 3:16
He came to His own, and His own people did not receive Him. But to all who did receive Him, He gave them the right to be children of God, to those who believe in His name.
– John 1:11-12
– John 1:11-12
“To what should I compare this generation? It’s like children sitting in the marketplaces who call out to each other: We played the flute for you, but you didn’t dance; we sang a lament, but you didn’t mourn! For John did not come eating or drinking, and they say, ‘He has a demon!’ The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, ‘Look, a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!’ Yet wisdom is vindicated by her deeds.”
– Matthew 11:16-19
– Matthew 11:16-19
Jesus came to carry our load, starting with the burden of our sin
Then He proceeded to denounce the towns where most of His miracles were done, because they did not repent.
— Matthew 11:20
— Matthew 11:20
At that time Jesus said, “I praise You, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because You have hidden these things from the wise and learned and revealed them to infants. Yes, Father, because this was Your good pleasure.
– Matthew 11:25-26
– Matthew 11:25-26
All things have been entrusted to Me by My Father.
— Matthew 11:27a
— Matthew 11:27a
There is nothing that might be exempted from… “All things: earth, heaven, and hell; men, angels, and devils; time, death, and eternity; all things: salvation and damnation; grace and judgment; life and death; all things: truth, righteousness, glory, peace, and joy, consolation and refreshing, rest and hope, deliverance from sin, victory in temptation, overcoming the world, communion with God, the love of God, the life in God—all things have been delivered unto him. He is the almighty Lord, the Giver of divine gifts of grace, the Executor of all divine works, the Prince of life, and therefore the Captain of our salvation.”
— R.C. Lenski, quoting Petri
— R.C. Lenski, quoting Petri

– Matthew 11:28-30

• Come to me
“Come to Me, all of you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.
— Matthew 11:28 [Emphasis added]
— Matthew 11:28 [Emphasis added]
“The Pharisees all said ‘Do!’ and tried to make the people follow Moses and the traditions. But true salvation is found only in a Person, Jesus Christ. To come to Him means to trust Him. This invitation is open to those who are exhausted and burdened down. That is exactly how the people felt under the yoke of pharisaical legalism.
– W. Wiersbe

• Take up my yoke
All of you, take up My yoke and learn from me
– Matthew 11:29a [Emphasis added]
– Matthew 11:29a [Emphasis added]
For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.”
– Matthew 11:30
– Matthew 11:30
“In rabbinic Judaism, a ‘yoke’ symbolized a rabbi's interpretation of the law and the lifestyle that their disciples were expected to adopt.’”
“They tie up heavy loads that are hard to carry and put them on people’s shoulders, but they themselves aren’t willing to lift a finger to move them.”
— Matthew 23:4
— Matthew 23:4
To “take a yoke” in that day meant to become a disciple. When we submit to Christ, we are yoked to Him. The word “easy” means “well-fitting”; He has just the yoke that is tailor-made for our lives and needs. The burden of doing His will is not a heavy one.
– W. Wiersbe
– W. Wiersbe
Paradoxically those who take Christ’s yoke on them have rest, rest now and eternal rest in the hereafter
— L. Morris
— L. Morris
- Learn from me
Throughout this Gospel there is an emphasis on learning, on being a disciple, and the like, and the verb here is cognate with “disciple”; it means “learn through instruction.” To be a follower of Jesus is to be a disciple and therefore a learner

Discussion Questions //
- Pastor Tim shared how carrying a heavy newspaper bag at age 13 affected his physical walk for decades. In your own life, what "heavy bag" (a past stress, expectation, or trauma) did you start carrying early on? How has that burden shaped the "way you walk" today—mentally, emotionally, or spiritually?
- Pastor Tim cited a study showing that 74% of Americans struggle with stress-related conditions. Looking at the list of burdens he mentioned (economy, politics, unworthiness, etc.), which one feels the most "heavy" in your life right now? Why do we often feel the need to hide that we are "working to the point of exhaustion"?
- Pastor Tim described "casting" a burden as literally removing a heavy bookbag and tossing it to God. Why is "casting" our cares on Him (1 Peter 5:7) often harder in practice than it sounds? How can we tell when we are being "foolishly self-reliant" rather than simply being responsible?
- Pastor Tim noted that Jesus offers "rest," but then immediately tells us to "take up My yoke." Usually, a yoke implies more work, not rest. Based on his explanation of a "well-fitting" or "tailor-made" yoke, how does being "yoked to Christ" actually provide relief rather than adding another item to your to-do list?
- Pastor Tim contrasted the "yoke of rules" (the Pharisees) with the "yoke of relationship" (Jesus). In what ways do we accidentally turn our faith into a list of "heavy loads" like the Pharisees did? How does Pastor Tim’s point about Jesus being "gentle and humble" change the way you view your daily spiritual habits?
