Nine - Gentleness [Notes]

What kind of person are you becoming? Real transformation isn't about trying harder—it's about letting the Holy Spirit work in your life. Nine is a nine-week journey through the fruit of the Spirit discovering how God grows qualities like love, joy, peace, patience, and more in those who follow Jesus.
A gentle answer turns away anger, but a harsh word stirs up wrath.
– Proverbs 15:1 (CSB)
Nine – A Study of the Fruit of the Spirit
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. The law is not against such things.
– Galatians 5:22-23 (CSB)
Gentleness (meekness) isn’t weakness. It’s strength under God’s control.
Gentleness (meekness) isn’t weakness. It’s strength under God’s control.
  1. Gentleness defined: (praus, prautes) gentle, meek, mild
Matthew 5:5 (CSB) Blessed are the humble, for they will inherit the earth.
Matthew 5:5 (KJV) Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.
Come to me, all of you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, because I am lowly and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”
– Matthew 11:28-30 (CSB)
Gentleness: using the least amount of force or power needed when dealing with people.
– Dr. Gerald Peterman
Meekness: moral quality of humility and gentleness, usually exhibited during suffering or difficulty and accompanied by faith in God. The opposite of meekness is a harsh and proud wickedness that insists on immediate self-vindication. While the KJV employs “meek” or “meekness” 31 times, most modern English translations of the Bible favor “gentle” or “humble.” Biblical meekness is usually not simply gentleness and humility but those qualities displayed with integrity during times of trial.
– Dr. Robert Plummer
Gentleness (meekness) isn’t weakness. It’s strength under God’s control.
  1. Gentleness defined: (praus, prautes) gentle, meek, mild
  2. Gentleness developed: Peter’s journey from harshness to gentleness
As He was walking along the Sea of Galilee, He saw two brothers, Simon (who is called Peter), and his brother Andrew. They were casting a net into the sea—for they were fishermen. “Follow Me,” He told them, “and I will make you fish for people.” Immediately they left their nets and followed Him.
– Matthew 4:18-20 (CSB)
While he was still speaking, suddenly a mob came, and one of the Twelve named Judas was leading them. He came near Jesus to kiss Him, but Jesus said to him, “Judas, are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss?” When those around him saw what was going to happen, they asked, “Lord, should we strike with the sword?” Then one of them struck the high priest’s servant and cut off his right ear. But Jesus responded, “No more of this!” And touching his ear, He healed him.
– Luke 22:47-51 (CSB)
Who then will harm you if you are devoted to what is good? But even if you should suffer for righteousness, you are blessed. Do not fear them, or be intimidated,, but in your hearts regard Christ the Lord as holy, ready at any time to give a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you.

Yet do this with gentleness and reverence, keeping a clear conscience, so that when you are accused, those who disparage your good conduct in Christ will be put to shame. For it is better to suffer for doing good, if that should be God’s will, than for doing evil.
– 1 Peter 3:13-17 (CSB)
Gentleness (meekness) isn’t weakness. It’s strength under God’s control.
  1. Gentleness defined: (praus, prautes) gentle, meek, mild
  2. Gentleness developed: Peter’s journey from harshness to gentleness
  3. Gentleness demonstrated: In our words and actions
A gentle answer turns away anger, but a harsh word stirs up wrath.
– Proverbs 15:1 (CSB)
A ruler can be persuaded through patience, and a gentle tongue can break a bone.
– Proverbs 25:15 (CSB)
Therefore I, the prisoner in the Lord, urge you to walk worthy of the calling you have received, with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love.
– Ephesians 4:1-2 (CSB)
Therefore, as God’s chosen ones, holy and dearly loved, put on compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience.
– Colossians 3:12 (CSB)
Gentleness (meekness) isn’t weakness. It’s strength under God’s control.
