Psalms for the Summer - Part 4 [Notes]

What if this summer could strengthen your relationship with God and others? Psalms for the Summer is a 4-week journey through the Psalms as we discover how praise, creation, family, and community can help us experience the goodness of God all season long.
Psalms for the Summer
  • Week 1: Psalm 96 – Turn Up the Praise
  • Week 2: Psalm 19 – Get Outside
  • Week 3: Psalm 127 – Pass the Ball
  • Week 4: Psalm 133 – Light the Grill
Problem:
We tend to drift toward isolation and division.
Takeaway:
“Light the grill” and deepen your relationships this summer.
A song of ascents. Of David.
How delightfully good when brothers live together in harmony!
It is like fine oil on the head, running down on the beard, running down Aaron’s beard onto his robes. It is like the dew of Hermon falling on the mountains of Zion. For there the Lord has appointed the blessing—life forevermore.
— Psalm 133 (CSB)

— Psalm 133:2 (CSB) [Emphasis added]
The oil poured on Aaron’s head flowed down on his beard and shoulders, and onto the breastplate with the names of all 12 tribes. The oil thus symbolized the unity of the nation in worship under their consecrated priest. As the oil consecrated Aaron, so the unity of the worshipers in Jerusalem would consecrate the nation under God.
– Dr. Allen Ross
The Lord spoke to Moses:  “Take for yourself the finest spices: 12½ pounds of liquid myrrh, half as much (6¼ pounds) of fragrant cinnamon, 6¼ pounds of fragrant cane,  12½ pounds of cassia (by the sanctuary shekel), and a gallon of olive oil.  Prepare from these a holy anointing oil, a scented blend, the work of a perfumer; it will be holy anointing oil.   “With it you are to anoint the tent of meeting, the ark of the testimony,  the table with all its utensils, the lampstand with its utensils, the altar of incense,  the altar of burnt offering with all its utensils, and the basin with its stand.  Consecrate them and they will be especially holy. Whatever touches them will be consecrated.  Anoint Aaron and his sons and consecrate them to serve me as priests.
— Exodus 30:22-30 (CSB)
He poured some of the anointing oil on Aaron’s head and anointed and consecrated him
— Leviticus 8:12 (CSB)

— Psalm 133:3 (CSB) [Emphasis added]
May they all be one, as you, Father, are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us, so that the world may believe you sent me.
— John 17:21 (CSB)
So those who accepted his message were baptized, and that day about three thousand people were added to them.  They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching, to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread, and to prayer.  Everyone was filled with awe, and many wonders and signs were being performed through the apostles.  Now all the believers were together and held all things in common.  They sold their possessions and property and distributed the proceeds to all, as any had need.  Every day they devoted themselves to meeting together in the temple, and broke bread from house to house. They ate their food with joyful and sincere hearts,  praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. Every day the Lord added to their number those who were being saved.
— Acts 2:41-47 (CSB)
Our vision is to be an inviting church that leads people into a growing relationship with God and others, every day.
“Light the grill” and deepen your relationships this summer.

Discussion Questions //

  1. Pastor Josh said, "We tend to drift toward isolation and division."
Why do you think isolation comes so naturally in today's culture? What are some subtle ways you've experienced yourself drifting away from meaningful relationships?
  2. Psalm 133 describes unity as "delightfully good."
Think about a time when you experienced genuine Christian community. What made it so meaningful, and what can we do to help create that kind of environment for others?
  3. Jesus prayed in John 17 that His followers would be one.
Why do you think unity among believers is so important to Jesus? How does our unity (or lack of it) impact the way others see the gospel?
  4. The early church in Acts 2 devoted themselves to fellowship, sharing meals, and caring for one another.
Which of those practices do you think our culture or even our church tends to neglect the most? What is one step you could take this week to live that out more intentionally?
  5. The challenge was to "Light the grill" this summer by taking initiative in relationships.
Who is one person, family, neighbor, coworker, or church friend you could intentionally connect with in the next two weeks? What simple invitation could you extend to deepen that relationship?
