Sermon on the Mount - Part 4 [Notes]

In the Gospel of Matthew, chapters 5-7, we find arguably the most famous sermon of all time, Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount. Covering subjects like the beatitudes, being salt and light, the Lord’s prayer, generosity, and more, Jesus’ words are just as important and applicable today as they were 2,000 years ago. Whether you’re exploring the Christian faith, a new or newer believer, or a longtime follower of Jesus, we invite you to join us for this 12-week journey as we seek to grow together as His disciples.
Sin starts in the heart
The Sermon on the Mount: Matthew 5–7
  • Introduction: 5:1–16
  • Body: 5:17–7:12
  • Conclusion: 7:13–29
Matthew 5:21–30
  • 5:21-26 – Anger, Murder
  • 5:27-30 – Lust, Adultery
Jesus rejected the traditions of the Pharisees (vv. 21–48) and their practices (6:1–7:6). Six times Jesus said, “You have heard that it was said … But I tell you” (5:21–22, 27–28, 31–32, 33–34, 38–39, 43–44). These words make it clear that Jesus was presenting (a) what the Pharisees and teachers of the Law were saying to the people and, by contrast, (b) what God’s true intent of the Law was. This spelled out His statement (v. 20) that Pharisaic righteousness is not enough to gain entrance into the coming kingdom.
– Dr. Barbieri, The Bible Knowledge Commentary
“You have heard that it was said to our ancestors, Do not murder, and whoever murders will be subject to judgment. But I tell you, everyone who is angry with his brother or sister will be subject to judgment. Whoever insults his brother or sister, will be subject to the court. Whoever says, ‘You fool!’ will be subject to hellfire. So if you are offering your gift on the altar, and there you remember that your brother or sister has something against you, leave your gift there in front of the altar. First go and be reconciled with your brother or sister, and then come and offer your gift. Reach a settlement quickly with your adversary while you’re on the way with him to the court, or your adversary will hand you over to the judge, and the judge to the officer, and you will be thrown into prison. Truly I tell you, you will never get out of there until you have paid the last penny.
– Matthew 5:21-26 (CSB)

– Exodus 20:13 (CSB)
But I tell you, everyone who is angry with his brother or sister will be subject to judgment. Whoever insults his brother or sister, will be subject to the court. Whoever says, ‘You fool!’ will be subject to hellfire.
– Matthew 5:22 (CSB)
So if you are offering your gift on the altar, and there you remember that your brother or sister has something against you, leave your gift there in front of the altar. First go and be reconciled with your brother or sister, and then come and offer your gift.
– Matthew 5:23-24 (CSB)
The exhortation to be reconciled horizontally with one’s brother or sister is tied intimately to worship and devotion to God vertically.
– Dr. Jonathan Pennington, The Sermon on the Mount and Human Flourishing
Reach a settlement quickly with your adversary while you’re on the way with him to the court, or your adversary will hand you over to the judge, and the judge to the officer, and you will be thrown into prison. Truly I tell you, you will never get out of there until you have paid the last penny.
– Matthew 5:25-26 (CSB)
Sin starts in the heart.
You have heard that it was said, Do not commit adultery. But I tell you, everyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart. If your right eye causes you to sin, gouge it out and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of the parts of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell. And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of the parts of your body than for your whole body to go into hell.
– Matthew 5:27-30 (CSB)
“You have heard that it was said, Do not commit adultery.
– Matthew 5:27 (CSB)

Do not commit adultery
– Exodus 20:14 (CSB)
But I tell you, everyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart.
– Matthew 5:28 (CSB)
If your right eye causes you to sin, gouge it out and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of the parts of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell. And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of the parts of your body than for your whole body to go into hell.
– Matthew 5:29-30 (CSB)

Jesus’ words recorded in Matthew 5:29–30 have often been misunderstood. Obviously Jesus was not teaching physical mutilation, for a blind man could have as much of a problem with lust as a sighted person, and a man with only one hand might use it also to sin. Jesus was advocating the removal of the inward cause of offense. Since a lustful heart would ultimately lead to adultery, one’s heart must be changed.
–Dr. Barbieri, The Bible Knowledge Commentary
Sin starts in the heart
God, create a clean heart for me and renew a steadfast spirit within me.
– Psalm 51:10 (CSB)
Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my concerns. See if there is any offensive way in me; lead me in the everlasting way.
– Psalm 139:23-24 (CSB)
If we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
– 1 John 1:9 (CSB)
