Covered - Part 1 [Notes]

Beginning in the Garden of Eden, where God took the life of an animal to cover Adam and Eve, we see the first temporary covering that points to the final and complete covering found in Christ’s shed blood on the cross. Along the way, we’ll trace this theme through the first Passover in Exodus, the sacrificial system in Leviticus, and the arrival of Jesus as the Lamb of God in the Gospel of John.
Takeaway:  God provided a covering for sin in the garden and forgiveness of sin at the cross.

The Lord God made clothing from skins for the man and his wife, and he clothed them.
 – Genesis 3:21 (CSB)
For the life of a creature is in the blood, and I have appointed it to you to make atonement on the altar for your lives, since it is the lifeblood that makes atonement.
- Leviticus 17:11 (CSB) [Emphasis added]
American Red Cross—Give Blood. Save A Life.
Both the man and his wife were naked, yet felt no shame.
– Genesis 2:25 (CSB)
Genesis 3
3:1-7 – Temptation and the Fall
3:8-13 – Hiding from God
3:14-19 – The Consequences of Sin
3:20-21 – Hope, Grace, and Mercy
3:22-24 – Removal from Eden
Genesis 3:1-7 – Temptation and the Fall
And the Lord God commanded the man, “You are free to eat from any tree of the garden, 17 but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for on the day you eat from it, you will certainly die.
— Genesis 2:16-17 (CSB)
Now the serpent was the most cunning of all the wild animals that the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God really say, ‘You can’t eat from any tree in the garden’?”
— Genesis 3:1 (CSB)
The “ancient serpent” is Satan (Revelation 12:9, 20:2)
Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they knew they were naked; so they sewed fig leaves together and made coverings for themselves.
— Genesis 3:7 (CSB)
Genesis 3:8-13 – Hiding from God
Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden at the time of the evening breeze, and they hid from the Lord God among the trees of the garden.
— Genesis 3:8 (CSB)
Genesis 3:14-19 – The Consequences of Sin
Genesis 3:14a So the Lord God said to the serpent…
Genesis 3:16a He said to the woman…
Genesis 3:17a And he said to the man…
Genesis 3:20-21 – Hope, Grace, and Mercy
Genesis 3:22-24 – Removal from Eden
So the Lord God sent him away from the garden of Eden to work the ground from which he was taken.
— Genesis 3:23 (CSB)
*After the first sin in chapter 3, humanity changed in a number of ways. First, Adam and Eve lost their original innocence. Their open eyes and sudden awareness of their nakedness, signify their shame and guilt. Before their sin, they knew no guilt in either their relationship with each other or with God.

*Second, they lost their immediate and easy access to God’s presence. Instead of meeting God in the cool of the day, they hid themselves because of a new awareness and estrangement from sin. They were no longer comfortable in his holy presence.

*Third, they lost the peaceful paradise and freedom of the garden of Eden when God expelled them. Thus they lost their freedom from pain, disease and death.

– Arnold and Beyer, Encountering the Old Testament, pgs. 57-58.
Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, in this way death spread to all people, because all sinned.
— Romans 5:12 (CSB)
Genesis 3:20-21 – Hope, Grace, and Mercy
The man named his wife Eve because she was the mother of all the living.
— Genesis 3:20 (CSB)
The Lord God made clothing from skins for the man and his wife, and he clothed them.
— Genesis 3:21 (CSB)
The Lord God made clothing from skins for the man and his wife, and he clothed them.
— Genesis 3:21 (CSB)
The Lord God made clothing from skins for the man and his wife, and he clothed them.
— Genesis 3:21 (CSB)
*All God’s dealings with people as sinners can be traced back to this act of disobedience by Adam and Eve. God is a saving God, however, and the fact that He clothed Adam and Eve testifies to that.

*An animal was sacrificed to provide garments of skin, and later all Israel’s animal sacrifices would be part of God’s provision to remedy the curse – a life for a life. The sinner shall die, (Ezek. 18:20; Rom. 6:23) yet he will live if he places his faith in the Lord, who has provided a Substitute.

*The skin with which God clothed Adam and Eve perpetually reminded them of God’s provision. Similarly in the fullness of time God accepted the sacrifice of Christ, and on the basis of that atonement He clothes believers in righteousness (Rom. 3:21–26).

–Dr. Allen Ross, Bible Knowledge Commentary
God provided a covering for sin in the garden and forgiveness of sin at the cross.
For just as through one man’s disobedience the many were made sinners, so also through the one man’s obedience the many will be made righteous.
— Romans 5:19 (CSB)
