Cherishing God’s Word helps us cherish Him
The instruction of the Lord is perfect, renewing one’s life;
the testimony of the Lord is trustworthy, making the inexperienced wise.
The precepts of the Lord are right, making the heart glad;
the command of the Lord is radiant, making the eyes light up.
The fear of the Lord is pure, enduring forever; the ordinances of the Lord are reliable
and altogether righteous.
They are more desirable than gold—than an abundance of pure gold; and sweeter than honey dripping from a honeycomb.
In addition, your servant is warned by them, and in keeping them there is an abundant reward.
– Psalm 19:7-11 (CSB)
1. David Anointed as the Future King
After Jesse presented seven of his sons to him, Samuel told Jesse, “The Lord hasn’t chosen any of these.” Samuel asked him, “Are these all the sons you have?” “There is still the youngest,” he answered, “but right now he’s tending the sheep.” Samuel told Jesse, “Send for him. We won’t sit down to eat until he gets here.” So Jesse sent for him. He had beautiful eyes and a healthy, handsome appearance. Then the Lord said, “Anoint him, for he is the one.” So Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the presence of his brothers, and the Spirit of the Lord came powerfully on David from that day forward. Then Samuel set out and went to Ramah.
– 1 Samuel 16:10–13 (CSB)
2. David the Musician in Saul’s Court
3. David and Goliath
David said to the Philistine, “You come against me with a sword, spear, and javelin, but I come against you in the name of the Lord of Armies, the God of the ranks of Israel—you have defied him.”
– 1 Samuel 17:45 (CSB)
When the Philistine started forward to attack him, David ran quickly to the battle line to meet the Philistine. David put his hand in the bag, took out a stone, slung it, and hit the Philistine on his forehead. The stone sank into his forehead, and he fell facedown to the ground.
– 1 Samuel 17:48–49 (CSB)
4. Saul’s Jealousy of David
So Saul watched David jealously from that day forward.
– 1 Samuel 18:9 (CSB)
5. David Becomes King at 30
David was thirty years old when he began his reign; he reigned forty years. In Hebron he reigned over Judah seven years and six months, and in Jerusalem he reigned thirty-three years over all Israel and Judah.
– 2 Samuel 5:4–5 (CSB)
6. God’s Covenant with David
Your house and kingdom will endure before me forever, and your throne will be established forever.
– 2 Samuel 7:16 (CSB)
7. David and Bathsheba
One evening David got up from his bed and strolled around on the roof of the palace. From the roof he saw a woman bathing—a very beautiful woman. So David sent someone to inquire about her, and he said, “Isn’t this Bathsheba, daughter of Eliam and wife of Uriah the Hethite?”
– 2 Samuel 11:2–3 (CSB)
8. David Dies at 70
Now King David was old and advanced in age. Although they covered him with bedclothes, he could not get warm.
–  1 Kings 1:1 (CSB)
Then David rested with his ancestors and was buried in the city of David. The length of time David reigned over Israel was forty years: he reigned seven years in Hebron and thirty-three years in Jerusalem. Solomon sat on the throne of his father David, and his kingship was firmly established.
– 1 Kings 2:10–12 (CSB)
The heavens declare the glory of God, and the expanse proclaims the work of his hands. Day after day they pour out speech; night after night they communicate knowledge.
– Psalm 19:1–2 (CSB)
Psalm 19:1-6 – general revelation
Psalm 19:7-11 – special revelation
Cherishing God’s Word helps us cherish Him
The instruction of the Lord is perfect, renewing one’s life; the testimony of the Lord is trustworthy, making the inexperienced wise.
– Psalm 19:7 (CSB)

The precepts of the Lord are right, making the heart glad;
the command of the Lord is radiant, making the eyes light up.
– Psalm 19:8 (CSB)

– Psalm 19:9 (CSB)

They are more desirable than gold—than an abundance of pure gold; and sweeter than honey dripping from a honeycomb. In addition, your servant is warned by them, and in keeping them there is an abundant reward.
– Psalm 19:10-11 (CSB)
Who perceives his unintentional sins? Cleanse me from my hidden faults. Moreover, keep your servant from willful sins; do not let them rule me.  Then I will be blameless and cleansed from blatant rebellion. May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable to you, Lord, my rock and my Redeemer.
– Psalm 19:12-14 (CSB)
“Contemplation of the holy Law led David to pray for complete cleansing so that he could live an upright (blameless) and acceptable life before God, his Rock and Redeemer.”
– Dr. Allen Ross, The Bible Knowledge Commentary
Cherishing God’s Word helps us cherish Him

Discussion Questions //

  1. Pastor Josh shared about staying in touch during a long-distance relationship using tools like AOL Instant Messenger, calling cards, and handwritten letters. If you’re old enough to remember some of those tools, share a memory or story.
  2. Read Psalm 19:1-6, then compare it with Romans 1:20. What aspects of God’s character are revealed through creation (for example, His power, creativity, order, or majesty)? How does creation point people toward God, even without written Scripture?
  3. Read Psalm 19:7-9. God’s Word is described as a form of special revelation. What different descriptions of God’s Word stand out to you in these verses, and what effects does David say God’s Word can have on our lives?
  4. Read Psalm 19:10-11. David compares God’s Word to gold (a precious commodity) and honey (a precious and sweet food). What does this comparison reveal about how David viewed God’s Word? How does that challenge or affirm how we view it today?
  5. Read Psalm 19:12-14. In response to God’s revelation through creation and His Word, David prays for cleansing, obedience, and a heart that pleases God. How does this prayer show that cherishing God’s revelation leads to cherishing a relationship with Him?
  6. As we close, share briefly how you are seeking to personally read, reflect on, and respond to God’s Word in this new year. What has been encouraging, and what has been challenging?
  7. Close your time together in prayer, asking God to help you cherish His Word and grow in your relationship with Him and others.
