Why We Sing - Part 6 [Notes]

You’re invited to join us for "Why We Sing," a six-week series about worshiping God through music. On any given Sunday, we sing three, four, sometimes five songs together. At home, in the car, or in our earbuds, we turn on worship music or put a favorite song on repeat. But have you ever stopped to ask: why do we sing? Why lift our voices in praise to God? How and why does singing bless God and stir our own souls? What if we don’t feel like singing? Or don’t feel worthy to sing to God? Or maybe we feel like our voice isn’t good enough to really sing out? In this series, we’ll explore six biblical reasons why we sing. Our prayer is that each of us will grow in our theological understanding of musical worship – and as a community, feel more free and empowered to lift our voices in praise to God on Sundays and throughout the week.
No eye has seen, no ear has heard, and no mind has imagined what God has prepared for those who love Him.
– 2 Corinthians 2:9b (NLT)
Then I heard something like the voice of a vast multitude, like the sound of cascading waters,  and like the rumbling of loud thunder, saying: Hallelujah, because our Lord God, the Almighty, has begun to reign! Let us be glad, rejoice, and give Him glory, because the marriage of the Lamb has come, and His wife (and that’s who we are) has prepared herself. She was given fine linen to wear, bright and pure. For the fine linen represents the righteous acts of the saints.
– Revelation 19:6-8 (HCSB)
For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two will become one flesh. This mystery is profound, but I am talking about Christ and the church.
– Ephesians 5:31-32 (HCSB)
  • Unity and Diversity:
After this I looked, and there was a vast multitude from every nation, tribe, people, and language, which no one could number, standing before the throne and before the Lamb. They were robed in white with palm branches in their hands.  And they cried out in a loud voice: Salvation belongs to our God, who is seated on the throne, and to the Lamb! All the angels stood around the throne, the elders, and the four living creatures, and they fell facedown before the throne and worshiped God, saying: Amen! Blessing and glory and wisdom and thanksgiving and honor and power and strength be to our God forever and ever. Amen.
– Revelation 7:9-12 (HCSB)
  • Joy and Awe:
Day and night they never stop, saying: Holy, holy, holy, Lord God, the Almighty, who was, who is, and who is coming
– Revelation 4:8b (HCSB)
  • Vivid and Dynamic:
Immediately I was in the Spirit, and a throne was set there in heaven. One was seated on the throne, and the One seated looked like jasper and carnelian stone. A rainbow that looked like an emerald surrounded the throne. Around that throne were 24 thrones, and on the thrones sat 24 elders dressed in white clothes, with gold crowns on their heads. Flashes of lightning and rumblings of thunder came from the throne. Seven fiery torches were burning before the throne, which are the seven spirits of God. Something like a sea of glass, similar to crystal, was also before the throne.
– Revelation 4:2-6 (HCSB)
When He took the scroll, the four living creatures and the 24 elders fell down before the Lamb. Each one had a harp and gold bowls filled with incense, which are the prayers of the saints. And they sang a new song: You are worthy to take the scroll and to open its seals, because You were slaughtered, and You redeemed people for God by Your blood from every tribe and language and people and nation. You made them (believers) a kingdom and priests to our God, and they will reign on the earth. Then I looked and heard the voice of many angels around the throne, and also of the living creatures and of the elders. Their number was countless thousands, plus thousands of thousands. They said with a loud voice: The Lamb who was slaughtered is worthy to receive power and riches and wisdom and strength and honor and glory and blessing! I heard every creature in heaven, on earth, under the earth, on the sea, and everything in them say: Blessing and honor and glory and dominion to the One seated on the throne, and to the Lamb, forever and ever! The four living creatures said, “Amen,” and the elders fell down and worshiped.
– Revelation 5:8-14 (HCSB)
  • Continuous and Creative:
They sang the song of God’s servant Moses and the song of the Lamb: Great and awe-inspiring are Your works, Lord God, the Almighty; righteous and true are Your ways, King of the Nations. 4 Lord, who will not fear and glorify Your name? Because You alone are holy, for all the nations will come and worship before You because Your righteous acts have been revealed.
– Revelation 15:3-4 (HCSB)
  • Be fully present when you are worshipping God.
  • Whenever you are distressed, fearful, discouraged, or even angry, lift up your eyes in worship.
  • Recognize the importance of worshipping with others

Discussion Questions //

  1. Why do you think we find it difficult to worship at times? Can you think of any examples of how worship helped you when you were struggling?
  2. Do you think it is important to worship even when we don’t feel like it? Explain your answer.
  3. Read Revelation 4:9-11; 5:8-14; and 7:9-12. What are some lessons we can learn from these verses about how to worship more effectively?
  4. Why do you think it is important we worship with others and not just by ourselves?
  5. What is something you personally can do to become a “better” worshipper?
