Psalms for the Summer - Part 2 [Notes]

What if this summer could strengthen your relationship with God and others? Psalms for the Summer is a 4-week journey through the Psalms as we discover how praise, creation, family, and community can help us experience the goodness of God all season long.
Psalms for the Summer
  • Week 1: Psalm 96 – Turn Up the Praise
  • Week 2: Psalm 19 – Get Outside
  • Week 3: Psalm 127 – Pass the Ball
  • Week 4: Psalm 133 – Light the Grill
While Paul was waiting for them in Athens, his spirit was troubled within him when he saw that the city was full of idols.
– Acts 17:16
For God’s wrath is revealed from heaven against all godlessness and unrighteousness of people who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth.
– Romans 1:18
For God’s wrath is revealed from heaven against all godlessness and unrighteousness of people who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth. since what can be known about God is evident among them, because God has shown it to them. For His invisible attributes, that is, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen since the creation of the world, being understood through what He has made. As a result, people are without excuse. For though they knew God, they did not glorify Him as God or show gratitude.
– Romans 1:18-21
Instead, their thinking became nonsense, and their senseless minds were darkened.  Claiming to be wise, they became fools and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images resembling mortal man, birds, four-footed animals, and reptiles.
— Romans 1:22-23
The fool says in his heart, “God does not exist.”
– Psalm 14:1a
Get outside and enjoy the God of creation
The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky proclaims the work of His hands. 2 Day after day they pour out speech; night after night they communicate knowledge. 3 There is no speech; there are no words; their voice is not heard. 4 Their message has gone out to all the earth, and their words to the ends of the world. In the heavens He has pitched a tent for the sun. 5 It is like a groom coming from the bridal chamber; it rejoices like an athlete running a course. 6 It rises from one end of the heavens and circles to their other end; nothing is hidden from its heat.
— Psalm 19:1-6
The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky proclaims the work of His hands.
– Psalm 19:1
The instruction of the Lord is perfect, renewing one’s life; the testimony of the Lord is trustworthy, making the inexperienced wise.
— Psalm 19:7
“[General revelation is] the revelation of God to all people, at all times, and in all places that proves that God exists and that He is intelligent, powerful, and transcendent. Special revelation is how God has chosen to reveal Himself through miraculous means. Special revelation includes physical appearances of God, dreams, visions, the written Word of God, and most importantly—Jesus Christ.”

Therefore take care how you listen. For whoever has, more will be given to him; and whoever does not have, even what he thinks he has will be taken away from him.”
— Luke 8:18
God’s revelation is clear
The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky proclaims the work of His hands.
– Psalm 19:1
“The Inca were well known to all as worshippers of the sun – deified as Inti and, in fact, there is a temple to Inti at Machu Picchu.
Pachacuti began to notice how the sun always follows a set path, performs definite tasks, and keeps certain hours as does a laborer. He also noted that the radiance of the sun can be dimmed by any passing cloud. He reasoned that if Inti were indeed truly God no mere created thing could dim his light.

It is like a groom coming from the bridal chamber; it rejoices like an athlete running a course. It rises from one end of the heavens and circles to their other end; nothing is hidden from its heat.
— Psalm 19:5-6
God’s revelation is clear.
God’s revelation is continuous.
Day after day they pour out speech; night after night they communicate knowledge.
– Psalm 19:2 [Emphasis added]
“Each day talks about God’s glory to the next day. Every night shares its knowledge of God with the following night.”
– Bratcher & Reyburn
God’s revelation is clear.
God’s revelation is continuous.
God's revelation is copious.
Day after day they pour out speech; night after night they communicate knowledge.
– Psalm 19:2 [Emphasis added]
[The phrase, “pour out speech”] is stronger in the Hebrew text than it appears to be in English, for the image is literally of a gushing spring that copiously pours forth the sweet, refreshing waters of revelation.
– J.M. Boice
God’s revelation is clear.
God’s revelation is continuous.
God's revelation is copious.
God's revelation is common
There is no speech; there are no words; their voice is not heard. Their message has gone out to all the earth, and their words to the ends of the world. It rises from one end of the heavens and circles to their other end; nothing is hidden from its heat.
— Psalm 19:3-6
There is no speech; there are no words; their voice is not heard.
– Psalm 19:3
Yahweh, our Lord, how magnificent is Your name throughout the earth! You have covered the heavens with Your majesty. Because of Your adversaries, You have established a stronghold from the mouths of children and nursing infants to silence the enemy and the avenger. When I observe Your heavens, the work of Your fingers, the moon and the stars, which You set in place, what is man that You remember him, the son of man that You look after him?  You made him little less than God and crowned him with glory and honor. You made him lord over the works of Your hands; You put everything under his feet: all the sheep and oxen, as well as the animals in the wild, the birds of the sky, and the fish of the sea that pass through the currents of the seas. Yahweh, our Lord, how magnificent is Your name throughout the earth!
— Psalm 8:1-9

Discussion Questions //

  1. Pastor Tim emphasized that creation points us to the Creator rather than being something to worship itself. When was the last time being outside caused you to stop and praise God? What was it about that experience that stirred your heart?

  2. Romans 1 teaches that people can suppress the truth about God despite the evidence around them. What are some modern-day “idols” that compete for our worship or attention? How can we recognize when something good has begun to take God's rightful place in our lives?

  3. Pastor Tim described four characteristics of God's revelation through creation: it is clear, continuous, copious, and common. Which of those truths stands out to you the most, and why? How does that truth strengthen your confidence in God's desire to make Himself known?

  4. The message challenged believers to “get outside and enjoy the God of creation.” What practical ways could you intentionally connect with God through His creation this summer? How might slowing down and paying attention change your perspective or your relationship with Him?

  5. Pastor Tim shared that his response to seeing God's handiwork is often worship. When you consider the vastness of creation alongside Psalm 8's question, “What is man that You remember him?” how does it affect your view of God's love and care for you personally?

  6. Bonus Question:
If you were taking a friend who doesn't know Christ to your favorite place in nature, what would you point out as evidence of God's character or creativity, and how would you use that moment to start a spiritual conversation?
