Avoiding Tough Relationship Truths

May 25, 2025    Andrew Archer

Relationships are messy—and we all know it. Whether it's tension with a spouse, a frustrating coworker, or unmet expectations with family, conflict is unavoidable. But what if the first step toward healthier relationships starts not with them, but with us? This week, Pastor Andrew unpacks Jesus’ teaching from the Sermon on the Mount and shows how gospel humility, a clear view of Christ, and real accountability can help us stop pointing fingers and start looking in the mirror.

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

1. Share about a time when you had a small conflict with someone in the past. How did you handle that situation?

2. Read Matthew 7:1-2. What do you think about “judging others?” Is that something you view positively? Negatively? Neutrally? Why? What do we learn about “judging others” from Jesus in this passage and elsewhere in the Bible?

3. Read Matthew 7:3-5. Share about a situation you have done this well. What was the result of that versus a time you didn’t do it well?

4. Read Ephesians 4:15. Do you struggle to speak the truth in love? What are you more prone to speak, grace or truth? How might you grow in doing both?

5. What difference would it make in your life and the lives of others if each time you were hurt by someone or a conflict was brewing, you paused and prayed Psalm 139:23-24?
